Old Army Gadgets
Saw one of these on ebay, though I would have spotted it at a distance at a show.
Think they were standard issue in radio shelters and day rooms too
Maybe they still are?

Re: Old Army Gadgets
Is that a loaded question?? I still puff on a cigar now and then. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it!
I found the Dog Tags, the old Army ones from 1960 to 1966, and the Air Force ones from 1980 to 1995.

Re: Old Army Gadgets
You know thats why I love sites like this. The living history that you guys represent is amazing. My uncle was a WWII vet, went a shore DDay plus 5 and was in Germany till after the war and I loved to hear him talk about it as a kid.Probably what sparked my life long love of military history.

Re: Old Army Gadgets
Not that it's any surprise to fellow members here, but I was more of a Nimrod kinda guy.
They sold Nimrods at the PX...
I also used this Zenith I had found, complete with the classic "in country" engravings.
Upside down it looks as if the woman was scratching herself.
I quit smoking cigarettes 10 or 11 years ago. It so was easier to smoke when packs were 35 cents and cartons were $2.85 at the PX.

Re: Old Army Gadgets
I still have my originals I think. Have no idea where, buried in a box I am sure. I had several of them but only one was engraved. The engraving was nowhere hear as good as the knock offs. I also have a Nimrod, they were great lighters, wind, rain, no matter. They lit. I quit smoking 28 years ago and the only thing I miss is not having a lighter nearby to light the torch. I don't think the Nimrod would be a good choice for that task.

Re: Old Army Gadgets
oddly, I am wearing my Army {no tooth notch} dog tags from 1965 today. You see, when I am in florida I am usually alone so just to be sure should I fall dead somewhere they will find them and at least know who I am. I had another tag made up with phone numbers and emails and put it on the chain. I used them when I did my solo flights all over the USA over 8 years time, too.
Thing is when I returned to Europe last week, I forgot to remove them so....
I found it interesting that the three metal detectors at airports didn't go off.
I also have my original zippo, the chrome is well worn off now to polished copper as we would put them on the avionics bay between the seats and the helicopter vibrations would rub off the chrome.
Here is the front side with an in-country fix when the hinge broke, aircraft safety wire! The back of it has almost no chrome left.
I also have several fake ones given to me by friends over the years that were made in Vn after we all left to be sold to tourists.
I stopped smoking cigarettes after VN but then took up cigars and pipes until about 5 years ago when I stopped that too.
