My M 151 A1 Restoration Project

Guy, just do what I did. Don't flush it and allow a rotted freeze plug to blow out while your driving. That sends all the rust and crud out of the block and all over your nice newly painted engine. Once there, the water evaporates and leaves a rust residue that's harder to remove than POR 15. You now owe me an extra Hendricks for this sage advice....

I'll make sure I bring you a bottle to Sussex.

Ok, break time is over! Project update - Brother is going to get back into the engine now that we have the internal parts for the re-build. I have the body off the rotisserie and plan on blasting the areas that will be covered up when the new body panels are installed. Blaster is ready to go and the weather is looking good for tomorrow. Pictures to follow.

So after 3 attempts with the sand blaster I finally got the back area blasted today. Will brush on POR tomorrow and then it's ready to install the rear cross members, rear floor, rear fender tops and read panel. About time!

What I like about the POR is the adhesion compared to the weldable primer that I was using. If I'm doing a plug weld I will take a scribe and scrape off the POR in the weld area before welding. Works well - so yes, I'm satisfied.

POR is complete. Now I can start putting some panels back on. With this being done the next parts that CMD will be working on are the rear triangles (already have drawing) and full side panels as I'm not making mine out of pieces!

Here are some pictures of the POR areas that I did. Not very exciting other than I can start putting panels on. I took these pictures after the first coat and finished the second coat earlier today. I also reached into the frame rails as far as I could.



To reach into the frame rails I wired a foam brush to a piece of all thread.

You don't think the coating will contaminate the welds going forward? I know you say you will scratch off the weld area but you know the area around it heats up an gases out. Plus you will need to grind the weld area which will leave bare metal where the weld through primer leaves a galvanized coating. I am curious to see how it works since it is definitely more durable than the primer.

I've used both the weldable primer and the POR on this project. I've not seen any issues with weld quality using the POR. While I agree that there is a small amount of gassing out from the POR around the plug weld, I do not feel it's an issue. Especially for what I'm doing. One reason that I like to make a decent size cut out for the plug welding. If I think about it, I'll do a small sample and do a bend test. But again, from what I've seen I have no concerns about the weld quality.

I have the overall dimensions wrote down but they are at the shop. I'll post them and as you can guess, I'll be working on the full side soon as mine will need it. Funny how that works.

She is looking real good!!! ... that POR 15 is the bomb.it don't like heat of welding too much but I just touch up afterwards. I'M going to do the entire bottom of mine as well as the drivetrain ...it's held up on my snow plow for my truck for three years and we salt the roads heavy in newfoundland. Great work can't wait to see more progress!!!

So actually started working on MY 151 again. I welded the rear cross member on tonight and the next items to go on are the rear fender tops. Then rear panel, inner rear cross members and rear floor. All parts are ready at this time so my goal is to do this over the long weekend. Pictures to follow. As i used POR between the panels the prep work is a little tedious but hopefully pays off in the long run.
