Returned the top, waiting to see how that goes.
It has a wicked pressure build up in the gas tank so I got to check the lines and figure out why the cap isn't venting.
Also sprang a leak from the water pump, got a replacement from AZone, hope to get it put on this weekend. and lastly i fabed a license plate holder during lunch last week. I didn't want the tag in the spare tire, (I have plans for that area)so a little head scratching and some scrap from the trash equals tag mount! Sandblast and paint will make it pretty nice. I have a 3 way splitter in the harness plug for the trailer service lights, that's where I'll get power for the tag light.

Got the water pump off and new one on.
I timed the truck, it was off a good bit but it has a ruff idle now. Getting alot of the little popping out the exhaust and it stumbles when you try to rev it up.
Concerned about how little oil I see up top. I open the oil cap and don't really see any oil flowing around onto the rockers and stuff.

When you timed it did you use a standard timing light or a dial back light?

Standard non adjustable light. Lined up the pointer with the tick mark on the crank pulley.

If it has points you might want to check them and if you have to reset them you will also have to reset the timing. Also check the valve lash.

It has the Prestolite electronic in it, and I do need to check valve lash.
The inner dizzy cap does have a chip out of one of the plug wire towers. Maybe causing a a missfire too.

Is there any chance that your timing pointer could be bent giving you a false indicator?

Pointer is good. I put a few deg of advance in it and it's better. Used propane and didn't find any vacuum leaks. Might be that darn idle mix screw.

HA! Found the air leak!
It was at the PCV valve threads. Pulled it, pipe taped it and now idles fine. The tube fitting for the line to the valve cover was a little lose too. No more little "pop" in the exhaust and a very smooth idle now.
Checked the lash. Good to go. Crazy adjusting it while it's running. My hand is still shaking from that wrench bouncing up and down.
I will need to buy some plugs for it sooner or later, there is an oddball plug in the group. All are old Champs except one which I can't even read.
It still falls on it's face when you give step on the gas. It'll stumble and die. I'm going to check the float level.

The stumble and die is a bad accelerator pump in the carb.

Just did a rebuild on the darn thing. Put in a full gasket set and accelerator pump. Hope to pull the carb again early this week.

How did you find a leak there at those fittings, I saw where you mentioned propane before, but at over $5.00 a gallon for that stuff here, I need to figure out a different way to check that. Will liquid soap or something work?
I also have that little popping sound in my exhaust, I don't have a timing light, so I would have to check my timing some other way, I read someplace that it could be done with a multi meter, but forgot where that was I read it. I am interested in finding leaks, so a good method for that would be awesome...

I had a stumble in mine as well, but I tightened up my jet screw until it really stumbled, then backed out about a quarter turn and it seems O.K. for now. I can pull that steep hill on my street in third gear on both sides of the hill, and I had plenty of vehicles that could not do that in the past, so I must be running fairly good. I won't know for sure until I get her on the open road, I still aint taking it out on the Highway until I get some real good tail lights on it though and replace my flasher unit.
But so far, this thing has been more fun, and more of a great challenging experience than I had in a long time, I just love it....

You can find intake and vacuum leaks by spraying all connections with carb cleaner and listen for a change in the engine. Be sure the air cleaner hose is hooked up so you do not pull vapor into the carb from the inlet and get a false reading.

Whiterabbit, did you put the spring back in the accelerator pump correctly? It should be on the outside of the diaphragm, next to the cover. If that is right then the timing may still be off. These engines are very picky when it comes to the timing and all other settings.
