WTB NOS transmission

Unread post by Horst » September 15th, 2021, 4:54 pm

Looking for a NOS transmission in Europe. No rebuild, only new old stock is what I am looking for.

Out of curiosity, why NOS? Just because or is this a NOS project?

I would ask the same question, for the main reason that an NOS transmission was built on a low bid contract so it is not going to be top of the line quality. If you got a used one and had it professionally rebuilt or did it yourself then you know it is done right.

Here is the story: everything on my 151 has now 6300 miles (minus tires and some other wear items). With one exception, the transmission.

When I got my "Barstow" 151, the engine did overheat and the transmission was completely rusted above the oil level (filled with water).

Engine: I installed a government rebuild engine (in the foam with all the paperwork). This engine was ok, but did had vibrations at higher RPMs and developed water and oil leaks. It was just installed as a quick fix while I rebuild the original engine (it had blocked water passages to the head).

Transmission: Initially I got a take-out transmission but later on acquired a rebuild transmission. This transmission was loud and did not shift very well so I replaced it with another take-out which I partly rebuild (new parts in the transfer case).

So in my experience the trust in government rebuild engines and transmissions is quite low and I still dream of having a drive train as it left the factory.
