I just bought a set from Army Jeep parts and they were spot welded. original box dated 6/87.
I will find out about the old one tomorrow after I pick up my jeep at the shop. To hot to do it in my driveway.
Thanks for the comments and info

Frontline always had the best brake shoe deal, shoes and hardware for both axles plus e-brake band for $69.00

Bottom brake spring seems too fat/wrong. It would rub on the adjuster. Hmmm

Yes it would, just like any other drum brakes. That is how the adjustment is maintained without moving.

The updated kits are very specific for using the blue spring.

I have never been able to get that blue spring to lay properly against that star adjuster. All the shoes I've gotten all have a hole that is far too low which leaves the spring deformed against the star wheel.

Anyone else having that issue?

Cheers,
TJ

Are you also using the blue star adjuster?

Well, it hasn't occurred to me that the star adjusters were different and I'll tell you why.

I have bought plenty of brake components that were sold in 'kits' and the star wheels have all been the same. EXACTLY the same...except for their color and I can say that with great authority because (you know me) before I install them, I take these things apart and add a little lube and make sure the star adjusters run smoothly in and out... all the way. Too many times have I found these with poorly cut threads that seem to hang things up.

Some were cadmium finish and some were blue. Not painted blue but blue (exactly like they were dipped in PVC primer, by the way) and I have even received some that were blue like someone had gone at them with a permanent marker. So, I can only assume there is either some really shady stuff going on with star wheels & springs or I'm blind (and I'm NOT blind...yet).

But I will tell you this. I've never assembled brakes that were clearly wrong or blindly follow instructions. Comment on that policy as you will. If the spring provided wouldn't lay properly alongside the star wheel, it got put aside and I used a 'more correct' spring, even if it meant reusing a spring (and then, only if it was in good condition).

I can only assume some folks are taking a lot of unassociated parts and promoting them as kits. Thoughts?

Also, as per the photo I see Frontline is using, those star wheels are clearly different than what I have been receiving.

Cheers,
TJ

Don't know what to tell you on that one other than to call Jeff at Frontline. But I questioned the blue spring vs. white spring bit as far as the retraction springs a long time ago and I was flamed into oblivion BUT, Nobody came up with a reason for the color change or why you HAD to use them with the bonded shoes. They are the same length and the same wire diameter which would make them the same strength so what is the difference besides the color? This is like saying you absolutely cannot use 1" wheel cylinders on the front of and A1!! Can't do it, the world as we know it will end. Yea, right. You can do it and the end result is the vehicle is actually safer since the rear wheels will no longer lock up before the fronts and swing the back around.

My supposition is that Frontline is providing the correct combination (provided what the photo shows is exactly what you're getting). In fact, their stuff looks golden....but try to use those blue springs with the old style star wheel...well, just forget it.

I'm not here to badmouth the folks I bought my stuff from (somebody on eBay, not Frontline) but I've been getting a 'trail-mix' of stuff in kits for as long as I can remember. There are even sellers who are marketing kits which are actually for 1970 Galaxy 500 brakes and holding them out to be for the M151 series of truck and they are almost everything you'd need except for the star wheel and spring that goes next to it...turning a pretty profit too, I might add.

Bingo, that bottom spring does not work. Too Fat.
I might add that taking the drums off can be long affair also. It took me 2 hours to get a drum off, before I realized it had 2 screws holding it on...Damn rookie mistake or I am getting too old. Not all M-151's have them.
