War Posters

Unread post by m3a1 » June 30th, 2019, 1:16 pm

Things seem a little slow on the g838 so here's something for everyone to enjoy...

My Dad used to say, "Occasionally, even a blind hog finds an acorn." What follows came as a knock on my door. A fellow who lives nearby caught his wife trying to throw these out. He doesn't actually know me but he knows of me....so he brought them to me. The liberty bond posters are WWI. Everything else is WWII, dating between 1940 and 1943 as best as I can tell. I would imagine the Merchant Marine poster is likely to be something of a rarity. So glad these didn't end up in the trash. They may not be in the best condition but they're VERY cool!

Cheers,
TJ

That is a fantastic save! That is the type of material that is disappearing and causing the last couple generations to forget why we are a free country. They do not realize just how close we came to not being free!

I think of stuff like this like it's ripples in the waters of history. Sometimes somebody just throws things in the trash and the ripples cease....gone....forever. I really don't have the facilities to preserve these properly, so I've reached out the the National WWII Museum in New Orleans. Hoping they will respond. I'm also pretty sure that somewhere there is a Merchant Marine Museum which would be the perfect place for that one poster. In the meantime I'm going to look into the possibility of having these scanned on a large format scanner. I'm betting it would cost an arm and a leg and I doubt a museum would agree to make that happen in exchange for them (might be a violation of their 501c3 status) but, you never know.

Cheers,
TJ

If you don't find out anything about the Merchant Marine museum let me know. My cousins husband was the youngest supertanker captain in the fleet back in the early 80's, I am sure he would tell me the whereabouts of the museum and how to contact them.
Can you e-mail me just the ones pertaining to the merchant marine so I can show them to him?
