Barn Find

Unread post by Hambone » October 22nd, 2019, 8:35 pm

I know you will like these Rick, Found these the other day from the original owner w/ titles, 1973 Honda SL70's, going to need a resto., The best thing is the original miles, gentleman said his kids never rode them, they were rotting away like most jeeps I find, what a shame.

YOU WIN! That mileage is unbelievable! BRILLIANT find!

With kids, you never know. But to be fair, perhaps they didn't have a suitable place to ride 'em. I bought a minibike from Tractor Supply for my kids. The've completely ignored it which is really rather sad considering what having such a thing can do to help kids grow up

My father bought me a Honda Minitrail 50 and I rode the wheels off that thing. What I would have given to have had something as large as those!

Cheers,
TJ

That's exactly how barn finds happen. Keep driving slow and keep pulling into stranger's driveways, man.

Took a break from the jeep, blasted, sanded and repainted the frame, I won't bore you with this project, I'll post a few pics as I progress.

My brother has this XR 75. I powder coated the frame when I had my business. Covered with dirt at the moment but it's pretty nice.

Nice bike, the XR75's are bringing 2-3k in that condition, even more for the earlier ones.

First picture would be late 70's, second picture, I'm on the left, third picture is an '81 YZ 80. Both XL's came from a family down the road from us. They also had a Harley Davidson dirt bike. 2 stroke as I remember it.

The Honda 50 caught on fire in the back yard when the gas tank came off its mount and turned sideways while I was riding. My dad parted out the bike and keep the engine. I pestered him a year or so after about wanting to build a go cart. He told me if we could get the Honda engine running, he'd help me build a go cart. To his dismay, it fired up! We used an old Sears riding mover frame and wheels with the Honda frame and engine:

We signed up for the 4th of July parade and the day before, the project wasn't done. Parents sent me to bed around 9 and I was bummed out because it wasn't done. My dad stayed up all night and finished it so I could ride it in the parade.

Those are some cool pics, good to see you are still holding on to those memories, when I was that age I think we had a Polaroid Swinger camera, it took black and white pictures. I know where you got your skills from, that's a cool cart your dad built and manual transmission  , I think the QA50 had a 2 speed tranny.

Yes, 2 speed trans. As I recall, the chain was about 60 inches long. The rear brake was a pully belt system - welded pulley on the front and when the pedal was pushed, belt grabbed and slowed ya down. The seat was an old high stool chair back, gas tank was from the lawn mower, hand made chain guard. He brazed the upper "frame" from electrical conduit. The steering was cable/pulley invention that he made.
