Graves Mountain Rally August 29-September 2, 2019

Unread post by cgarbee » June 24th, 2019, 4:45 pm

Time to start the thread for this year's event.

11th Annual Graves Mountain Military Vehicle and Vintage 4x4 Trail Rides and Rally!
Labor Day Weekend
August 29-September 2, 2019

I need to update the dates on the website and upload the registration form, add the letter that I sent out to the mailing list, and get Chuck (aka: BMan) to finalize the shirt design...

However, here we are...

The website is located at:
https://gravesmountaintrailrides.com/

Looking forward to seeing everyone again this year, and to getting to meet those who will be attending for the first time...

For those that are able, we are providing an opportunity this year for folks to become members of our “Trail Crew”.
If you are able to come to either one (or both) of our trail maintenance weekends, you’ll get a special event t-shirt and half priced admission to the event.
These weekends will be July 4-7 and August 16-18, 2019.
Contact me in advance of either weekend to verify meeting locations and times and to be put on the Trail Crew list.

The good folks at Graves Mountain Lodge (the location of the Labor Day weekend trailrides/rally) put on a really good 4th of July celebration (band, food, fireworks, activities for the kids/family)….
I also have scheduled a work weekend at Graves Mountain (trail ride/cleanup of the trails) from July 4-7th for the Trailrides and Rally...

So, consider coming down on the 4th and enjoying the coolness of the mountains, the festivities, fireworks, etc.
Consider staying through the weekend and doing some riding and work upon the trails (earn that Trail Crew t-shirt and event registration discount...)

Let me know if you are coming so that I can roll out the welcome mat...

The Fourth of July weekend was our first trail cleanup of the year. We had a really good effort by those who managed to attend and got a lot of the trails cleared of major obstacles although they all could use a bit more trimming (especially of the raspberry and blackberry vines encroaching upon them...). We had a few storms and some rain at night that didn't do much to slow us down although we did have to knock off early each day due to the heat. We still have a bunch of trails that we didn't get to, and a few places that we would like to open up so that we can enjoy the views...

I have made it every year even over the constant battles with my former employer to do there best to not let me take off but I am going to have to say that I cannot make it this year. The cancer surgery has taken a lot out of me and there is no way I am going to be able to get everything prepared to come down this year. The extra heavy load of alcohol I got in the gas in my RV last year took a toll on it, I pretty much destroyed both exhaust manifolds by the time I got home running wide open throttle just to make 60 MPH. All Of that has to be replaced along with making a new exhaust system and I am just not up to it in the time remaining. Hoping for next year.

Just a reminder that we will be utilizing CB radios on the trails as the primary method of keeping the groups together, but that we also will be using FRS radios for communications between the groups/HQ/Range... A couple of folks have indicated that they are bringing surplus military rigs (PRC25/77, etc)… We'll post the common channels and frequencies at the HQ tent to facilitate folks' talking to each other (and will post online for those who want to chat before they check in at the tent...).

Just a reminder:
Our next trail maintenance weekend is scheduled for August 16-18, 2019.
Attend and help out for the entire weekend and you’ll get a special event t-shirt and half priced admission to the event.
We made great progress on our last work weekend, but we have a few trails that still need attention...
Contact me in advance of either weekend to verify meeting locations and times and to be put on the Trail Crew list.

WE are going to miss you a lot...
Hope the recovery (both yours and the RV's) is complete and swift...
I may take your camping spot this year, just so that no-one else thinks that it is available...I am going to hold you to being on-site in 2020... :)

I just wanted to thank everyone that made it to the rally.
I'd also like to thank those who's efforts made it a great weekend, especially:
Steve, Laura, and the gang from Rockridge Offroad
"Al Harvey" and Mike "SCSG-G4"
Chuck "BMan" and Sonny
Rad and Euan
The Graves family and the staff at Graves Mountain Lodge

We'll do it again next year, with just a few tweaks to enhance the experience for everyone.

Meanwhile, I have uploaded my photos and those from a few other folks to my flickr account at:

Looks like a really good turnout and absolutely perfect weather. I would have loved to have come but just as well I did not try. The recovery is just not far enough along yet. Thanks Cabell for guarding my spot for next year, I certainly hope to be able to be there.
