Hagerstown show - Anyone going?

Unread post by lpcoating » October 1st, 2021, 12:30 pm

I will not be attending. Curious if anyone else plans on going. This is the new Aberdeen show.

Nope, I was approached by the new president of the club at Gilbert asking if I would be going. I mentioned the problems we had at Aberdeen with being kicked out of our spots because they were needed "for traffic control" and then they were used to house a million dollar RV instead. His reply was "Everyone is upset about their spots moving". Well, yea. When you have had the same spots for ten plus years and then you are kicked out of them on false pretenses, yes I am upset and I never vended there again. Then he proceeds to tell me there is a whole new regime in place and things will be different. And yet when I asked about camping at your spot at Hagerstown he did not have a firm answer and referred me to Anja who was the main issue before. So apparently the new regime is not as new as it sounds. He tells me the gates are closed and locked at 9:00pm and there are armed security on site. You have to remember that this is an airport and it is under the control of the TSA I am sure. I have my doubts anyone will be allowed in there overnight. I am going to wait to hear from the people that are going to see how it goes before deciding what to do in the spring. They also do not have the dates set for spring. I told him this has always been a problem with this show, constantly changing dates at the last minute. People have to make plans and if you cannot plan ahead then you cannot go. It went from a 2 hour drive to a 3 1/2 hour drive for me.

We are looking forward to your report on how things go there. Especially the camping at your spot situation.

I would really like to hear how thinks went...

I thought hard about attending this year at Hagerstown as it is a slightly better drive than the Aberdeen was (I am driving up from Raleigh, NC) and I have missed seeing some folks that I only see at this show...and it's a new location...
Most of the stuff I have to sell can be sold easier on Ebay or MV website classifieds...
The date conflict with the fall harvest festival at the farm where I host the Labor Day Weekend Trailrides and Rally put the nail in the coffin for this year's attendance...

If the event is in the spring, and I can camp with my gear in my vendor spot, and we have a decent report form this year's activities...I likely will attend next year...

As far as RickF's comment about the management of the show and past experiences...
I used to have RickF as my neighbor at Cal Ripken stadium...and was one of the folks that lost spaces... My complaint at that time was that they discontinued the practice of listing the vendors (and their respective spaces) on the website and they wouldn't tell me the locations of my neighbors...so I didn't know what to request with a relocation...
Hopefully, they will consider publishing the space assignments at the new location so we can pick our neighbors...or at least try to honor requests to do so...

I know a couple people that were going to the show. I'll see if I can get some feedback from them.

I am also interested. Especially the camping at the spot part. I had many things stolen right off of my mutt at Aberdeen, Some of it during the day by people walking around! That was the worst place I have ever been as far as worrying about my stuff. Since then I will not vend and leave my stuff.

Here is an update from a vendor that went to the show:

Show was on a flat, concrete surface. No grass. Location was out behind a maintenance facility with room to expand for future events. There was one food vendor there (was good). The first show was about 1/2 the size of what Aberdeen has become. He felt that this was because of other events going on. There was a decent restaurant just outside of the gate and the show was about 10 min from Hagerstown. They did allow people to camp and there is a plane museum there with planes on display for the Mv show. The signage needs to improve as he had a hard time figuring out where to go but was told they'll improve it for next year. He plans on going back for the Spring show.

That was basically the same report I got, did your guy get a date for the spring show? May is only a little over 6 months away.

I'll ask but I don't think there is a firm date yet. I talked to Daryl Bensinger.

We will see I guess, I figure it will be like every other year where they decide in the last two months when to hold it and everyone has to scramble to get time off or change plans. At one time that show was well worth changing plans for but I don't think it anywhere near that anymore. And the full time vendors that do this for a living have to plan a year ahead so they know how o plan their routes and what shows they can or can't do accordingly.
