If you own an older Craftsman lathe.........

Unread post by Bill, Idaho » September 15th, 2016, 7:27 pm

If it happens to be old- as in the late 40's up until about the late 50's or so, and you need to change a failed drive belt. I just climbed that mountain. I got my father's when he died. (I think it is a 10' swing with about a 36" bed--they are almost identical to an Atlas) It was old when I watched him use it when I was a kid back in the 60's.
The drive belt finally gave up. When it happened, I was just about done making a small item for a friend. I thumped for about 15 seconds and broke. I opened up the top and scratched my head. I considered poking a stick in my eye, as opposed to changing belts.
$7 later (for the belt) at a local auto parts store, and about 3 hours later it lives, and is ready for another 60 years of bliss.

Seriously, if anyone needs the "how-to" let me know. It wasn't near as tough as I first thought.

Ya' ought to try replacing the belts on a under driven 1950's Sheldon lathe. UGH!

Also, if you own an older Craftsman/Atlas lathe and need parts, Clausing owns Atlas and still makes nearly all the parts for the 6 -12" lathes.
