M151 Fuel Markings (Airborne) Question

Unread post by Brownie63 » May 15th, 2019, 11:42 am

I served in the 82nd Airborne Div in the mid-70s ('73-'77). I've got a 1970 M151A2 that I'm going to dress out as a quarter-ton from my old unit. I served during the transition to camo so I'm torn between going that route or mean green.

My question regards the stenciled fuel markings. I've seen one old pic that in addition to the normal DO NOT OVERFILL ALLOW FOR EXPANSION,etc, adds "DO NOT FILL MORE THAN 4 1/2 INCHES FROM LIP FOR ABN OPS". My memory is faded but I don't recall the trucks in our unit having all that.

I've checked online manuals for rigging M151 for airdrops and saw the sole marking "FILL 3/4 FULL FOR ABN OPS" in the manual pics. That seems a little more familiar. The rigging manual text instructs to not fill over 3/4 full or under 1/2 full for airdrops.

Anybody have any photos, manuals, SOPs, experience, etc that would shed light on what would have been the proper fuel marking for Army airborne unit M151s during 1975-77?

I'm also going to be checking with my old Army brothers as well.

Thanks for any help.
