Thank you for the help gentlemen. That article is very helpful Surveyor. I may take you up on that late style head Fil. Thank you for identifying the early style head rick. I have some questions now:

What are they key characteristics btw the early and late engine heads?

What year were the late heads introduced?

The TMs refer to a sealer for the head gasket. Is this still to be used (like copper spray) or did they update the gaskets late production?

As Rick pointed out I unfortunately have a repro plate. I have read about other tags that may shed some light on this MUTTs history. I could use some help finding them while I await word on the engine head. I don't believe it is bad and will probably rebuild it anyway as a period correct head. I am in the process of removing the radiator and I am concerned about the bottom mounting bolts as they seem to have spun out and no longer catch so I can remove the lock nuts. Any ideas?

I will keep this thread open for gen discussion and repost a build thread for this A2. As for my pop's M151, I will post a separate build thread to get some opinions on whether to Live or Let Die. It is pretty rough in some key areas but hold great amounts of sentimental value. More to come.

Thanks for the offer Fil. The head checked out great and the valves were ground. Only issue is the one exhaust boss has a worn out thread hole but that can be mended. Didn't want to just throw it away on account of one fouled boss.

Well I installed the head using the updated exhaust gasket kit. Tried running it and would not stay running. After confirming proper dist placement with oil pump, good spark, clean plugs, it turns out the intake was leaking along the lower portion of the gaskets. So I removed the intake and doubled the gaskets with Permatex copper beads. As was mentioned before about the new exhaust gasket kits offsetting the intake fit. Waiting for cure then will try again. Unfortunately in this process I did loose another boss in the head but was able to mend so far.

The early head is not designed to use an exhaust gasket.

Well finless brown trout... Plus side is I have her running good. Just need to fine tune the timing. No more leaks intake or exhaust. Rick, I'm thinking that the copper gasket maker only for early exhaust manifolds instead of grease would be superior? Seems to aid a lot in sealing everything up good. Have more pics coming soon.

TM 34-1 states a "graphite grease" to be used on early heads. No gaskets. I went ahead and used the gasket kit to help augment leaks. Probably could have gotten away with just the copper gasket maker and no gasket kit.

I use the red Hi temp RTV silicone that is the same thing we used on airplane manifolds. You also have to pay very close attention to the torque specs since the inner and outer bolts are different and the early manifold without the gasket is different from the later manifold with the gasket. Put a gasket in and early manifold and it is all out the window at that point but I can tell you that if you get any of it wrong those exhaust manifolds flatten out like tin foil. They are very thin stainless steel and that is not very strong material.

Well I have her on the road. I have been driving to work. Canibalized an old plug wire to check timing, had to shorten the exhaust to just past the manifold do to the original being pinched just fore of the rear suspension. Will be running new pipe next year. She is running good. I have been taking farther trips in increments to not overdue it and keep highway time to a minimal. I looked at the spare tire carrier for a body number but found nothing. Maybe under the paint?

The number is under that paint someplace (on the spare tire carrier). Wire wheel it. I have found them both above and below the bolt/stud, so.... Not that there has been any real concrete regularity to this but the earlier numbers seems to be above the stud and the later numbers below. one or two coats of paint and you can't tell they are there.

And all the ones I have looked at had no numbers on there, sanded right down to bare metal. I STILL do not subscribe to that theory. It may have been one particular group that was stamped by a motor pool sergeant but not all A2's.
