Collector vehicle insurance

Unread post by Cav Trooper » August 4th, 2020, 10:26 pm

Has anyone had experience with Grundy Insurance vs. Hagerty? I have both the A2 and my 416 insured with Hagerty now. Grundy appears to be quite a bit less expensive. Question is, is Grundy worth looking into? I know the saying, you get what you pay for but sometimes you overpay for name. I'm just looking for experience with one company vs. the other by anyone having any dealings.

Hagerty expensive?! Keep in mind that Hagerty is one of the few, if not the only, insurance company that actually advocate driving your antique vehicle on a regular basis. Most of them put severe restrictions on when, where and how many miles you can put on a vehicle. Especially with the military vehicles, Hagerty covers you off road, within reason. No other insurance company out there will cover you in an antique vehicle once you leave the pavement. Hagerty also has unlimited mileage.

I use JC Taylor - Which I think is the same as Foremost. There are restrictions with them about how much you can drive and you send them a photo of the vehicle so they can see what kinda shape it is in. They want the vehicle garaged as well. I dive mine as much as I like for test driving, keeping it in shape and taking it to shows. You are just not supposed to use it like a commuter vehicle or use it as transport for people.

The cost has risen some but it's still around $150 a year.

I don't go off road and only take the vehicle to parades or other events if we ever have any again. It is garage kept. a couple hundred miles a year. I just paid my premium for Hagerty at $388 for Mutt and trailer, got a quote from Grundy for 268 but have not called them for specific details. Same stated value. I believe I had to send Hagerty pictures of the Mutt and trailer also. I hate shopping for insurance, like shopping for tires and like trying to compare apples, oranges and grapes per dollar in Chinese.

I am not an insurance agent, and don't play one on TV, but we discussed this subject on another forum a year or so back and the general consensus was that all these vehicles were being insured by the same underwriter, like Loyd's of London, or some other large insurerer, and that the various companies were marking up the premium to reflect their level of service. It seemed that everyones rates were going up at that time and that was the explaination.
The devil is in the details and when I researched insurance many moons ago, there were differences in stated value, appraisals, photos, off road, limited mileage, other drivers in the household, a trailer or other towed vehicle might not be covered, no passengers, etc. So it's not as easy as asking what someone else has, everyone has different requirements.

Get a quote and a copy of a declaration page. You might also want to speak with your "normal" vehicle insurerer to see if items like medical coverage, liability, etc., might be covered by them and have overlapping coverage. Also, some insurerers want them garage kept so that your homeowners insurance becomes involved if something happens while garaged.

I had always thought that this subject, along with registration and title issues for military vehicles would be an excellent subject for workshops at a national convention, but it has fallen on deaf ears. We'd all rather listen to convoy stories.

although you live in paradise - regarding spare parts and possibility to buy antique military cars in your country - it seem that insurance of these cars
is a little bit easier in the Czech Republic. I will pay 300 CZK ( some 12 USD) per year for my MUTT. Incuding free towing servise for 30 Milles, etc.
Well, different teritorry different habit.

Thai IS cheap! but what is your average income compared to ours? Average in the hobby over here runs from people like me on a low end pension to people making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year so average is a tough call here, I would put it at roughly 65,000.00 a year income.

Have used Condon-Skelly for several years. I paid $181 this month for my two Jeeps ( CJ2A , M151A2) for next twelve months. Price went up $4 from last year. Coverage matches my POV coverage with State Farm. Keep garaged also.

Does anyone really cover them without being garaged?

Hagerty will cover the bigger trucks without garaging them where the other companies want even those truck in a garage.

One of the big ones is ownded or rep'd by Allstate. At the local car shows, two very attractive young ladies with Ipads come around and quote you insurance with Haggarty's or Grundy's or someone. But it's handled through the local Allstate office. My sone lives with us and his , just being in the household prevents me from being insured with them. So I get the insurance on all my military vehilces and he is eligible to drive them. Go

A local agent can sell insurance from several companies. They are independents and not tied to one company. They sell the Hagerty and probably something like Foremost for motorcycles. They are specialty areas. With the high end 7 figure cars that Hagerty covers I seriously doubt they are owned by Allstate!

Condon-Skelly covers my A2 (garage kept) for around $90.00 annually. California registration requires electronic proof of coverage that is tied to the renewal process; no insurance, or insurance dropped/cancelled, and registration gets suspended until coverage is reinstated. Sigh......
