Re: coils
Here is a video of how to test your Mutt ignition coil. Includes the testing of NOS US coil and 2 aftermarket coils. Provided is the actual output voltage measured of all 3 coils, a real eye-opener.
Spoiler; none of the aftermarket coils tested had the proper primary resistance and this affected the output voltage of the coil. The higher inductance and resistance of the primary has more inductive “kickback” which must be absorbed by the capacitor if using points or electronic ignition module. This explains why many using aftermarket coils have failed electronic ignition modules a short time later after replacing the coil.

Re: coils
I've just finished watching the video. An excellent pictorial.....but a very disappointing outcome for the much vaunted "New Black" coils.
The price of original GI Mil-spec coils has probably doubled today.

Re: coils
And one particular dealer who is selling these "new" coils as "original specification" coils is probably not very happy with that information!!!

Thanks! Never saw anyone post the output voltage of an ignition coil before. Most likely because that Tektronix P6015A Probe cost over $2,600! https://www.newark.com/tektronix/p6015a ... easurement

Re: coils
I would guess the original coils had drawings, you would have to source the archives of those companies. First you would need to find the companies that made them and there were probably several. I am sure AC Delco had a hand in it. The problem is not making the coil but making the coil in the form factor that is needed to fit the M series distributor. That is a VERY limited application and is not going to be a big seller. Going to be hard to convince an American company (if there even are any more) to make such a limited item.

Prestolite Electric was a manufacture under part number CY4002. Here is a link to their website but you would have to contact them to see if they have info. https://www.prestolite.com/Corporate/

Re: coils
MVPA archives has truckloads of drawings from the military, I wonder if they might have a copy? As this was a "mil spec" part, the military should have had a tech drawing somewhere. Couldn't hurt to contact them to see.

Re: coils
This is interesting. So I did a search on the CY4002 part number. Found a company that has 295 of them! They purchase surplus. Interesting enough we were in their system as we've done business in the past. Out of curiosity, I asked them to quote the following quantities, hoping for some secret honey hole that wanted to sell them for $25 each. LOL - No such luck!
Part Number Qty Price Total
CY4002 295 $295.63 $87,210.85
Description: COIL

Condition: New Surplus

CY4002 100 $375.00 $37,500.00

CY4002 50 $410.00 $20,500.00
