Top Radiator Mount

Just installed radiator in the A1 using the one piece radiator mount/lifting eye bracket. The A2 has the two piece, which consists of the lifting eye and a separate top radiator bracket.which bolt to the block. The rubber isolator that is used on the A2 is about1/2 inch too long for the A1 bracket. It causes the radiator to tilt away from the engine at the top which causes the fan to hit the shroud at the bottom of the shroud.

Comparing the two brackets, the early bracket is close to 1/2 inch longer.

Does anyone have the early bracket? How long is your top isolator?

Of course I didn't keep the old A1 isolator.

Any ideas/comments?

What do the early parts manuals reveal?

I am using the early A1 mount on an A2, my insulator is 1 1/2 long, that's just the rubber not including the studs, mine fits fine.

If you check the -20P manual from 1971 you might be able to find out whether the mounts are the same. I cannot find a download 71 0r 72 -20P but I did find an amended version from 74. The only part number I am seeing is 2510-832-5655. I really do not thing 1/2" is going to make a big difference. If you have a big, noticeable lean to the radiator then something else is out of place. Check the lower mounts to see if they are straight and make sure the radiator brackets are on correctly.

Here is the A1 bracket next to an A2. The picture doesn't show the difference very well. I made comparison measurements between the A1 and A2 and this is the only difference I've found.

I thought they used the same upper rubber mount, I have some NOS I could measure if needed.

Please do. The ones I have are 1.5". What type bracket do you have?

I haven't checked the manuals for part #'s between the two, I have used these on both. Has the upper radiator mount been soldered back on, maybe out of position?

I can't get to my best A1, it's still crushed under a shed from a storm, he is a pic of another A1 I have, appear to be the same.

No problem, If the bottom rubber mounts are worn, it could have shifted a little.

I suggest you take that A1 mount and set it on a piece of paper and mark the mount holes and then drop a straightedge down from the face of it to the paper and make a mark and then measure how far out from the mount holes to the face of the mount. I am thinking maybe due to the different shapes of the mounts it may be more of an illusion of different position than is actually there. I will see if I can get the stuff off my hood of my A1 and measure it tomorrow.

You may be meowing up the wrong tree.

Your radiator's position is determined by three mounts (four, if you consider the powerpack as a whole). One at the top (the one you fellas are discussing presently) and two bracket arms below; one on either side of the block. Each of these bracket arms has two fasteners holding it to the engine block. It is possible to have the lowers mis-aligned. It is also possible to find that they have been damaged in some way.

Are they undamaged and at least appear to be level in relation to one another? Are the bracket arm fasteners all in place? Are the isolators correct and in good condition?

Also, consider that your power pack does have some wriggle room for forward and rearward alignment.

Get under there and have a good look because when things down below get wonky, big changes happen up top.
