How to find year of Mfr for A2?

Unread post by ccdoran » October 28th, 2022, 5:09 pm

Hi guys,

I’ve tried to do research into determining the year of manufacture for my A2. The original data tag reads:

NB0EX9 47179

There is no DOD stamped into the tag. I have tried looking up the contract number (DAAE-07-71-C-0103) but the only info I can find is basic contract info. And I’ve tried (unsuccessfully) doing research into determining the DOD based upon the SN. The previous owner thought it is a 74, but he didn’t have any real reason as to why. I’m sorry to ask such a basic question, but I just can’t seem to find the answer on my own. I appreciate any help and/or info.

Thanks!
Chris

Have you found the body tag which should be on the transmission tunnel about where your right ankle would be when driving? It will be a metal tag welded to the tunnel wall behind the lines running to the firewall. If you find that number then you can get a picture of it and pass that along to Ken the Muttguru on here and he can get you pretty close. Since these vehicles had no serial numbers there is no real accurate record of actual dates.

That spare tire thing is not a given. That was stamped in by someone somewhere but it has never been determined who or where and it is not on all A2's. Here is a link to the location thread on here.

look at the production date stamped on the horn. if it's original, this might prove helpful.

the date on the horn would be a good idea but do you really know that the horn is original?
If you want to use dates on data tags for records check many parts of see if they all align.

There are a few additional hints which could give you a good indication:
  • the transmission has a cast date (on the driver side) and a manufacturing tag with the build month and year. If there is a rebuild tag, then the transmission date is of no use
  • the wheel drive shafts have a cast date
  • typically the wiring has a manufacturing date
Does it have the emission equipment? If yes, that gives you a minimum year to begin with.

To Horst,199th mp, and Rickf

Horst,

Thanks for that information. Can you expand on some of those points?

You stated that the transmission has a cast date (on the driver side). Is the manufacturing tag you mentioned (with the build month and year) on the driver's side also?

Where is the cast date on the wheel drive shafts?

Where on the wiring harness would I find the manufacturing date?

To what type of emission equipment were you referring? A cat converter? If there is emission equip what was the first year that was introduced?

199th MP-

Where on the horn is the horn date located?

Rick,

I looked for the body tag on the transmission tunnel, on the driver's side, behind the lines, near where my ankle would be. There is clearly no tag in that location on my body. It doesn't look like one had ever been there.

Also I read that the SN (which is also the hood number, if I am correct), were sequencial. NAXXXX series, then NBXXXX, then NCXXXX. So does anyone keep a database of the progression of those numbers along with dates of manufacture?

Thanks all!
Chris

Ken the Muttguru has a database of the serial numbers that have been submitted to him by owners. There was a database that was run by a member of Steel Soldiers that included some of the M151 series but again, since they were never serial numbered from the factory they were very hard to account for. You have to understand that the hood number is the number on the data plate. The data plate is issued by the military when that particular vehicle is assigned to its station. Those data plates are screwed to the dashboard and can easily be switched between vehicles. ( not legally or officially ) and were in many cases both in and out of the military. As far as the numbers on the transmission and engine, any cast in numbers are simply component casting dates and will not mean anything as far as the vehicle year. They cast tens of thousands of engine and transmission blocks in a year. Those blocks would have been used on many different years of vehicles. The engine and data plates are a better bet but again, like I said before, you need to check many different plates to see hoy many line up with the same or close dates. Powerpaks, which are the engine and trans combo, were changed on these vehicles on a regular basis for any number pf reasons right down to just practicing to do it. So depending on those plates alone cannot be done. BUT, If the engine and trans plates match the horn plate you are getting closer. Now, if the gauges and or wiring harness tags match you have your answer since it is highly unlikely that all of these components would have been changed with parts from the same year.

Here is Kens info, Send him a PM and tell him what you are looking for and also send him some pics of the vehicle. Engine compartment, Interior front, both sides and the rear. He will get back to you with the best info he can based on what he sees.

Here is another site with info on dating and ID. This used to be on out WIKI and I believe this is from Kens archives. I hope to get our Wiki up and going again someday.

Rick has a vaild point with the cast dates but in my experience (my 151) they absolutely can match. In my case everything is 1972, horn data plate, casting date of transmission (which I had to replace later on), casting date of the wheel drive shafts, wires and so on. Even the piston rods have a matching casting date but I would not recommend to open the engine just for this ;)

The data plate with the manufacturing date of the transmission is a small aluminum plate which can be seen from below. The casting date of the shafts are somewhere along the drive shafts as far as I remember.

Emission equipment means of course no catalytic converter, it is still a carbureted engine with no electronics. First you would have a round, black charcoal canister in the engine compartment and second your fuel tank would not have a big single cover but multiple smaller covers for the different hose fittings. The carburetor has a hidden idle mixture screw and has a different internal jetting. Most of these carburetors also have a date code.

As said above, your powerpack could very well be swapped somewhere in its life. So either look for clear discrepancies of dates or maybe everything lines up date-wise and then you will know...

My 151 also does not have the mentioned tag, it appears that some AMG build A2 don't have them. Being a former "Barstow" M151, it is also quite clear that this tag was not removed at some point in time.

Did you already post some good pictures of your jeep? We love pictures!
