Coils and Swiss modules

Unread post by Hambone » January 18th, 2023, 11:32 pm

Broke down some rebuilt distributors today at Red River, most seem to have NOS coils and modules in them, he will be putting them on Ebay or give them a call if you need an original.

Contacting Red River is like contacting Amazon, FedEx or UPS. Cannot find an e-mail or phone number anywhere.

Any points plates? And the timing advance springs? Those springs are unobtanium and they are slowly but surely rusting away and breaking. I would like a package of each size.

Red River Parts 903-547-2226

We were saving the coils, rotor, rotor caps and electronic modules, rest went in a scrap box, there were a few points set up in the bunch. I will call Blake and tell him to save the scraps, I'm sure I can get all the springs you want. About half the distributors had prestolite modules and the potting had broke down in every one of them, I saved a few of those, going to experiment with repotting them.

Ralph
The coils test good, everyone we tested were within spec., like I said, I think most were replaced new when they rebuild the distributors, I saw a nice box of ambulance goodies gathered up for someone. :D

I took my 151A1 and 416 to a car show near Ft. Hood, TEXAS late October. As usual, lots of stories told. Each one I told “I’m looking for a points type distributor (ignitor)”. I kept getting two names. I contacted both but “no, I might have electronic type”. Neither panned out. There was a young man 40ish, that kept coming back asking questions. He had a 151A1 that had belonged to his Dad. He told me that he had sold a distributor the week before with plug wires for $20. Yep, that’s my story….always a few days late. Anyway, I stayed for the awards ceremony. It was drawing to an end and I heard someone calling my name. It was the young man. He had gone home and brought his Jeep back. Also told me he had something for me.
Well the Jeep was a driver, not a show Jeep. The something was a distributor in a plastic bag. No idea what type, but he was willing to part with it for $20. I did not open it up until I got home. I was like a kid waiting for Christmas. Could not believe what I was looking at. Points type. Point had never sparked. Rotor and cap never sparked. With coil. Black case. I have a total of $35 invested. Bought 2 cans of paint.

I did remove my electronic distributor from Jeep. Installed points distributor and took for a ride. Sweet… removed and replaced with electronic.

That place is a goldmine of parts, easily 5K worth of coils sitting on that bench, they won't last long on ebay. Thanks for sharing.

That was a sweet deal on the distributor, did you ask him if he had more? The original inner distributor caps and the original Swiss modules are getting hard to find. Doesn't hurt to have a stash to rebuild your distributor unless you trust China.

Hambone, did the distributor bodies end up in the dumpster? I have a dozen distributors that were surplused probably out of the military dumpster because the dog on the bottom of the distributor shaft was put on in the wrong position. I would love to buy the empty bodies and shafts just so I do not have to go through remounting all of those dogs!

Had a great visit with a fellow member yesterday(Hondo100/Ralph) and his wife, they were in the area for a few days, great people, we could have visited all day, he even got a little taste of the junkyard. Nice to put a face to our fellow members, I think his wife can live with his MV habits after she saw how bad it could be. Now, he can always say "at least I'm not as bad as Hambone". Ralph is building a M718, so he was able to check mine out and snap a few pics, I think it motivated him a little, I even let him slip away with a couple treasures to go along with the truckload of treasures he picked up from Red River.

The wife and I had a great time at Hambone's. After being there a few minutes, we felt like we'd known him all of our lives. All of his work from the mini-bikes to the M718 was perfection. My project list grew longer when he suggested I build a rotisserie. The mini-bike races were the best. Maybe my wife will win next time. :D
