Rick, it was probably a drive by shooting!
We have those nasty armadillos down here. I freakn' hate those $%^$# things!
I learned my lesson about shooting inside city limits. It's amazing how loud a 30-06 is! My "city" only has 1 blinking light at the intersection, small country town so I thought no big deal. I grew up in East Tn. up in the mountains and it was normal to shoot critters in your yard or farm. I found out they kind'a frown on that around here.
Let's just say I love .22 CB's in a heavy barrel Mossberg M44 rifle now.
Raymond, sounds like them ground hogs are calling in reinforcements! Watch out for a counter attack from them!

P.S. Last spring, I even got one out at the city ball field. The Clarksville Boat Club, of which I am an officer, is the Clarksville Athletic Association, and we care for the ball field. It was digging into the equipment shed.
