Anti-theft device: Anyone tried one of these?
As an M151 n00b, I've been reading up on different subjects here. Sometimes it's an area I know a little about, sometimes it's an area someone here has suggested. Anyway, one of these areas was vehicle security.
I read about battery-kill switches and the like, but I'm wondering whether anyone's using this pretty simple Denver Boot-like device. Seems like it would defeat most "casual" thieves. Amazon ratings are pretty good, and it looks to be made of heavy-gauge steel.
Anyway, for what it's worth...

Re: Anti-theft device: Anyone tried one of these?
The best theft deterrent I have seen is the one the military used, A chain welded to the floor and looped through the steering wheel with a quality lock. I am a locksmith and I look at those cheap boots and clubs and think, they give directions on the internet on how to break into those things! A chain with a quality sidebar padlock will defeat most thieves short of cutting the chain. I personally use a cable and padlock, loop the cable through the pedals and steering wheel and secure with the lock. The cable is designed not to be cut with normal cutters.
This is the lock I use. I got it much cheaper through locksmithing channels though.

I plan on putting a kill switch (like the ones used in a race car) up under the dash. With my current rate of progress I have about a year until I do it!

A kill switch is good but remember that these things roll real easy. They could just push it away and start it later.

Re: Anti-theft device: Anyone tried one of these?
My Marine Corps M151A2 came with a version of one of these (transmission tunnel locks). If I am going to leave the vehicle unattended I always lock the gear shift lever. Nothing is failsafe though... most locks, kill switches, etc only deter the amateur criminals. Any repo man,or sufficiently talented thief, could snake a vehicle in mere minutes (err... seconds).

Rollbacks are a wonderful thing! And with high speed winches and modified pumps they are even better.

Re: Anti-theft device: Anyone tried one of these?
While mine is home, I have a GSD. When it is out and about, such as when I park it at a stop-n-rob for a soda, the GSD is usually on the seat. If that option cannot work, then I chain the pedals, shifter, and steering wheel together with a gnarly chain and equally gnarly lock.
AND the GSD if I can. The neat thing about the GSD is that it fits just about everything.

There is an official tech bulletin covering security of wheeled vehicles. It's TB9-2300-422-20 dated 27-Aug-1988. If anyone can upload it to the MANUALS section of the board, I'll forward it.

Good sized dog, never thought of that one. GSD actually stands for the breed German Shepherd Dog but the other explanation works just as well. Nice looking pooches. We had a thread up about pets at one time, I will try to find it. Going to be doing a bunch of networking tonight so you will see much of me. Maybe not for several nights if things do not go well.
