Re: M718A1 restoration
Getting ready to repaint the engine, Ken said the jeep was built in late 72, I believe it to have the original engine, it is painted in OD Green. Were the engines still green in late 72?, haven't decided which way to go, green or black. If I wanted to go back green, what paint would you recommend for the engine? haven't seen any high heat OD. Thanks Hambone

Re: M718A1 restoration
I am thinking the black engines and undercarriage came with AMG. That engine being a 71 contract was most likely a Ford contract engine and in my opinion would be green originally. Is the vehicle a Ford or AMG?

Re: M718A1 restoration
Now you have me wondering, could the M151A2 jeep have been built by Ford then converted to M718A1 under AMG contract? or did they use Ford engine in early AMG? Did AMG ever have green engine?. Did Ford ever have a side drain? if not, it's an AMG body.
Re: M718A1 restoration
I just checked, same contract number on my 151

Re: M718A1 restoration
Ford never had the side drain and my guess is that AMG used up the Ford engines as they went and the ones built for AMG were painted black. In 72 AMG has JUST gotten the contract so they were still using up some of the Ford stuff I am sure. Painting the undercarriage black is easy, aim gun and pull trigger but to do the engine it would involve a separate process and therefore take extra time. Time was money in these tight contracts.

Re: M718A1 restoration
Think I will go back green since it was original color, would it be same as body, 24087?
Re: M718A1 restoration
don't think so but don't have a good idea what the correct color is. Looks to me more like forrest green.

Was the original color of your jeep 24087?

Re: M718A1 restoration
Yes, that's how it came from the factory. Underbody and engine bay are still 24087. At some point, while in storage and probably when it was converted into a MRC/AN-83, it was sprayed over and the 4 color camo outlines were applied.
30 years in the open desert took its toll and the color was very faded. I had to respray some part of the vehicle, specifically the rear floor and wall, the best fit was 383 CARC green, I did not know better at that time (and this forum did not yet exist).
The front half of the vehicle is still in its paint how I got it but I am using weapon oil to preserve it and make it look nicer.
Don't want to spoil your thread but this is how it got across the pond (still at the Dutch dealership where I got it in 2004):

Re: M718A1 restoration
Thanks Horst, I still have descent green on the intake and generator, guess I will try to match it, I was hoping someone had painted one and had a paint recommendation.
