need input to make Army mutt a Marine

Unread post by tbh726 » December 13th, 2021, 11:32 pm

So a few things... thanks for all of the input i have gotten from this site.. for getting me able to bring this thing back to life... still have a long way to go... but was looking for input... a few questions.. i was in the Marines and i can remember a bunch about being in these, but just cant remember the details was not in Motor T...
  • 1 i know the bumper is Army and need to change it to Marine one, but what other parts.
2 How was the axe and shovel painted was it camo, green, not at all
3 what was painted on bumper... for some reason i remember "HQ" and "1/7"(for H&S 1bn 7thMar) on it but can't remember was it left or right side..
4 Ropes did the Marines have it in place? seemed other services got everything before Marines did..
thanks for any input

AXE ON 151A2.png
This is on the A2, with the 1980's camo color.I seen the tools painted green/black.It's been too long for me to remember the details. With the green mutt, the lettering/numbers were yellow(gold)
The flat strip of metal across the gas cap was the USMC solution to gas theft!

From late 70's I believe on up all lettering was subdued. Black lettering and no hood numbers. The hood numbers were on the dash under the grab handle. Wheel hubs would be square although I have seen marine units with lifting eye hubs. Marine units had complete fording kits.

Didn't the front bumper have something out on the ends?

The front fender halves were of a A2 as the seller was trying to make it look like an A2
The headlights has a checker board rod cover to protect them.
I should have taken the junk stuff off the hood, a bad habit of using it for a shelf!!

Marine bumper, hub caps and correct USMC markings would make a good first impression. Under the hood the fording valve with the corresponding handle on the dash including the plate should also be there.

Deep water fording kit maybe.

Don’t think Marines 151 ever had ROPS. However that’s what I installed on my USMC Jeep nevertheless.

I thought the ROPS was a government mandate due to all of the injuries and deaths due to rollovers? I am pretty sure all of the A2's had the ROPS installed after a certain date.

The A2 I bought had the ROPS on it, which the 1st hand buyer got it from the USMC in the 80's, I took it off as the ROPS didn't exist when I was in the Service to my country! I thought it was a 1980 mutt? I was going to put it on the 151, but I thought it would increase the odds to tip over, but then it shouldn't have with how I drive.I think I talk too much!!

Great information... anyone know where to look for a Marine front bumper?

Thinking about it, I don't think my comment makes sense ;) There is this specific bracket for the deep water fording kit air intake with ROPS, so apparently ROPS was used with that kit and that kit is Marines. (or did Army jeeps have deep water fording? Probably not).

Another fact however, all the USMC M151A2 from Barstow did not have ROPS, so someone decided in the end of the 1980s, when the Barstow jeeps where still an active inventory, to not retrofit them with ROPS.

Another fact, the MWO for ROPS says completion date is 30 September 1991, so by this time all active and all vehicles in administrative storage should have been equipped with ROPS. However this is an ARMY MWO, so I cannot find any reference to Marines vehicles? Did an ARMY MWO automatically cover USMC too?

When I bought the 151, there was ROPS with it, but not installed.
