10 October, final work being done to smooth out the edges that were not part of the panels from Guy. I'm afraid I'll have to consider adding the attachments hole for the gas can straps as well a the top bows, as my cousin was a little over-enthusiastic.....

I'll handle the sanding of the non-repaired areas when the truck comes home in a couple of weeks, then have to decide on finishing in 24087 or 4-color MERDC with a grey desert scheme. Marking will be for 2nd AD, 502nd MP Company, and I'll add the siren, red light and the spare tire plate to complete.
Only five years so far............

Guy Loomis, my cousin (hot rod builder, and also full Tucker Torpedo resto under his belt) who, with his son have been doing the panel work on my A2, complemented the size, accuracy and precise fit of the various panels from your shop, especially the fender tops, which literally dropped in place. Although removing the old metal was a lot of spot weld plug cutting, adding the fresh 18 ga metal went very quickly!

Update on what has moved into six years.

My cousin has been doing the body work, with his son, replacing bad metal with CMD products (Thanks Guy!), then using old school methods to blend the new with the not-so-new. Being a tinkerer of sorts, he also brought in local restoration peeps for rebuilding the Zenith carb and solid state distributor. It sounds good. Fuel system flushed of contaminated two year old fuel, with 110 leaded in the tank now, thanks to a supplier that lives close to the shop.

By the way, the A2 is in a bay next to another long term restoration that I'm not permitted to photograph. I can say that this particular car was one of 50 made, there was a movie about the car and the man who built the company in the late forties. Makes me feel a little special knowing the work on the A2 is being done by the same pair who are restoring this low-production number!

I will bet that project is a Tucker. Just to let you know, don't be surprised if it does not run well on that avgas. High octane fuel is made for high compression engines to prevent preignion (pinging). These are about as far from high compression as you can get so the slower burning rate of the avgas can cause hesitation and overall sluggish performance in your engine. One advantage of that gas is it will last a long time, not years but a year is not out of the question.
Just had another thought on the gas, if it is racing fuel it will have a pretty fair amount of methanol in it unless they changed racing fuel out to ethanol since I was using it 20 years ago. Methanol is very corrosive to anything but stainless steel lines and components. It will eat the fuel pump diaphragm in short order and if the carb rebuild used a GI kit it will also go after the accelerator pump diaphragm.

Mark,

Yes.

Rick,

Wasn't a tough guess, was it? I passed the fuel concerns on to my cousin. It's not avgas, it's racing fuel from SUNOCO.

Yea, the guess was easy. On the gas you might want to check into that. Racing gas in the past had a lot of alcohol in it in different forms. And the alcohol was methanol, not the more common ethanol. This may be different. Cam 2 didn't use alcohol that I know of, That was what I ran in the last street car I built and had no issues with it. Besides the 5.00 a gallon price!!!!!! But Sunoco race gas is what they are using in the NASCAR series and I know that has alcohol because they advertise it as such.

Looking for a description of how the top bow latch pins attach to the body. These are located on the side, on the forward side of the rear wheel arch, and serve as a locator for the lower leg of the top bow when erected. The ones on Guy's website don't appear to be threaded for any retainer on the back side. And I could use two of these bad boys.

Jim,

They are welded. There is a gusset type bracket that they weld to that is then spot welded to the rear fender top / side panel. It's a complex little stamping. We do not make that part but you should be able to use flat bar for a bracket. We have the pins, $9 each plus shipping. I'll see if I can get a picture of the original.
