NOS Windshield Cowl seal won't fit

Post by ekennaugh » May 12th, 2022, 12:42 pm

Hello, and thanks in advance for any thoughts on the following -

I have a 1965 M151-A1 and this past fall I obtained a NOS 151-A1 windshield. I mounted it and found it was incredibly difficult to insert the hinge pins and it required someone pulling like crazy on each corner to slide the passenger side pin in, and could only get a portion of the driver side pin in - getting them out requires a drift pin. (They are the fording style pin) I chalked it up to the cowl seal still being "new". The hinge hole on the windshield is a good 1/4 inch or so higher than the body hinge hole. I figured several months of being under compression might help, but it's still impossible to get the pins to fit. I drive a lot with the windshield down, and need to be able to single highhandedly put the windshield up as needed.

I too have put on a new windshield with a new seal, needed help putting in the two hinge pins. Once installed, I left it for a long time with the windshield up and now the rubber has the shape, I can put it on and take it off by myself.
I mean...
In my inexperienced opinion... you just need to leave it for a while with the windshield up for it to take shape.
All the best

Thanks for the reply. The new windshield was left in the up position for the last 6 months, I would have thought it would have compressed enough by now.

I'd say six months is plenty of time to get that rubber into shape. Maybe someone can give you another solution.

I think I heated the rubber with a heat gun to soften it so I could compress more.common sense in the heating process.??

Do the hinges look like the holes will actually line up if the gasket compresses enough? Or does it look like the holes are going to still be misaligned once you get down to the correct height? If that is the case you may have a mismatched set of hinges, top from an A1 and bottom from an A2. They need to be a matched set from one or the other. I personally believe the A2 are better because the A2 gasket is a tiny bit thicker than the original A1 gasket and the A2 gasket is all that is available. I have a couple sets out in the garage that I can check tomorrow to get the part numbers off of. The numbers were here on the site somewhere for both sets but I have no idea where anymore.

Sounds like the classic problem A2 gasket on an A1 windshield, I've put 3 A2 gaskets on 3 A1 frames, I never forced them, it was a couple day process slowly pulling down on the ratchet straps.

The NOS windshield came in the box from the manufacturer so I assume they would have A1 style hinges. The windshield hinge holes seem like they would line up if the gasket was thinner. I’ll try the heat gun method first and see if that helps. I also could try to take the old windshield mounted hinges and swap them over? Last resort I have a NOS cowl seal I could try and use instead of the one it came with. Thanks to all the input and I’ll be sure to post my final solution

An "NOS" windshield would not come with hinges on it. It would not come with anything external at all on it, just the bare shell. NOS stands for New Old Stock, as in New original military parts in this case so it would not have had anything at all on it if it were in fact NOS. That does not mean someone did not package up a new one with hinges on it and sell it as such. Hard to say. I have not heard of anyone making M-151 windshields aftermarket yet.

I purchased the windshield from Red River Parts down in New Boston, TX. I did have to move over my vacuum wiper motors and lines, top brace mounts and footman loop, but gasket and hinges were already on it. I've included a photo of the carton it came in . Not sure if 10/87 shown is the mfg. date, but it would seem a late date to be making A1 windshields? I'll plan to see how difficult it is to move over my old windshields hinges and try and swap them. Thank you all again for your thoughts and suggestions

The 87 date has me wondering what is happening there. I can see the military ordering parts for vehicles less than 10 years old since 10 years is the timeout date and they go bye-bye. But the is 18 years after the last A1 was made so 8 years after the last A1 was technically taken out of service.
Strange.
