Old water pump
Good afternoon mates! several pieces of the old engine that I have left over from the restoration .... among these pieces is the water pump.
The options I have for this old pump are ...
1, if it's in good condition ... I want to clean it inside and out, paint it, and save it for when I need a spare.
2, If it is in bad condition .... repair it and save it for the future.
3, if it is wrong and the repair is not possible ... throw it away and finish.
So how can I tell if the pump is bad or ok?

It looks ok from the extreme closeup shots I see. The rust should come right off and the impeller looks good. If the shaft feels good when it turns I would definitely keep it. The only way to know if the seals are good is to put it on and try it. Is there any indication that there has been coolant running out of the hole behind the flange for the pulley? If the seal is bad coolant will come out that weep hole. If no staining then it is good. I managed to track down tree rebuild kits that I am going to put on pumps I have here so I can sell them. The kits used to be readily available but are very hard to find anymore. Just like the pumps are getting hard to find.

Ok rickf, thanks for your answer
I do not know if at some point this pump will have been pouring water through this hole, that motor will have been stopped and on the street for many years.
For now I'm going to clean and store it.
I have seen these parts on a jeep spare parts page, are they valid for our pumps?

Jeep is a different company, different parts.The m151 vehicles are in a category of its own.They were made by Willy, ford, kaiser,
amg, amc all built basically the same. The A2 had different rear suspension
If my memory is right, if you can move the fan shaft up and down then the bearing is bad, it will leak water, pump is no good.The moderator might need might need to moderate my answer!

I understand Marcos, I know they are different cars, but I had thought that maybe the water pump is the same. If not ... doubt resolved.

Also look for water pumps used in Caterpillar 1404 / Hercules G1600 engine.

Never knew about the Cat pump, being a diesel engine and therefore low speed wouldn't that have a different impeller?
On edit I just looked up that engine and it is not a diesel and the pump looks the same. Good call Dave.

If anyone still has one of the water pump repair kits, is there any reference number on the new seal by any chance? And likewise with the bearing?

Nothing Ken, The rubber seals on the ends of the bearing have "Made in USA" and "Hoover" on them and nothing else. The other piece has nothing at all.

Can someone tell me (us) how to disassemble a water pump for rebuild? I have acquired several water pumps over the years and would like to try to do a rebuild on one or two of the better ones. I can’t figure out how to get it apart.

There seems to be a couple of versions of water pumps with differences in body castings and pulley flange hole numbers. I can find pics showing pulley flanges with 2 holes and 4 holes. There is one body casting that is an exact match to the M151 pump. Another casting looks more squared off; maybe cheaper to make the casting mold?

Haven't rebuilt a M151 pump but rebuilt my M211 pump, its all pressed on.

Hola amigos! Saco a flote le hilo...
After a while, I decided to open the water pump to check it and save it or throw it away... I have disassembled it, I have checked that the bearing is good, I have gotten a new gasket (After going around many times) but, I have a problem, I have removed a bushing that was on the shaft, and now I cannot assemble the pump because I am missing that bushing. I add an image so you can see the bushing. The questions...
Is it necessary to put that cap on? Can I assemble the pump without it?
Can someone tell me what the measurement of this piece is?
