Electric motor

I just seen a segment on TV, on electric motors this guy is putting in old cars and the cars go pretty good.I wonder if anyone has put an electric motor in a mutt?
But then the 4 wheel drive function would complicate the procedure among other things.But then again it wouldn't be a mutt no more.

They have been doing that for years. The kids at the college I worked at did it with a fairly new Monte Carlo that was a flood car. I towed it there for them and they pulled the engine and transmission. Sourced another transmission and got a grant for a special experimental motor and batteries. This was 2003 so before lithium batteries. They rewrote the programming for the transmission and had an adapter made to mate the engine to the original transmission. I got to drive it and it was interesting to say the least. Not really efficient due to power loss through the transmission and they eventually did away with the transmission but it had moved to another location by then so I didn't see it. The batteries back then were very limiting and it would only go 20 miles at most.

So with a Mutt all you need is a repurposed motor from a wrecked Tesla and the batteries from the same vehicle or similar. Adapt the motor to the transmission input and you are on the road. And pretty damn quickly down the road probably.

There is a guy over at G838 that put one in a M38. Ran it on standard lead acid batteries.

It was a cool vehicle. Very well done. Very clean and professionally executed, Been a while since I saw his posts, but I think he used a salvaged motor and controller from a wreck.

Thanks guys. Y'all jinxed me with all this electric vehicle talk.

I just picked up a new Beamer PTV (Personal Transport Vehicle) for 50 bucks at what turned out to be a rather damp flea market. Yeah, that's right.... still NEW...and only 50 bucks. The darned thing still had the plastic film on it. The first owner bought it and promptly died. Second owner bought it at the estate sale and then, let it sit in a shed.

The person I bought it from was not one of those people with a lot of gittyup. Everyone at the flea market took a turn standing on it with muddy feet and then promptly passed it up. I came in at day's end with a lowball offer and closed the deal. Naturally, when I brought it home, my wife gave me "The Look" but immediately warmed up to it as soon as I gave it a bath and topped off the tires.

It had been stored badly, the charger was lost and the batteries (which are still readily available) are almost certainly no good. But, who knows? I'll put a charge on the batteries and then we'll see what's what.

Can't wait to see what makes it tick. And if everything works, I may flip it and run away with the money. If it stays, I think some serious vismods are going to be in order...that is, if my wife doesn't claim it for rides on the seawall in Galveston.

OK, I did a search for "BMW PTV and I came up with pictures of hundreds of cars and a ton of political rants but nothing that fits your description. Is this like a Segway?
