4 Groove crank pulley

Unread post by m38inmaine » October 2nd, 2019, 8:10 pm

I am changing an A1 engine over to a A2 60 Amp and the crank pulley I have is 4 groove. Will the 4 groove crank pulley be compatible with the 3 groove water pump and alternator pulley ?

Thanks

Not sure. I think the 4 groove pulley was for the great big alternator/generator with the carbon pile voltage regulator for a search light or a high power radio. I do know that others have reported using a 2 groove pulley for a 3 pulley system when switching from the 25 amp generator to a alternator (i.e. adding a 2 groove pulley to an alternator which originally had a 3 groove pulley) has resulted in no ill effects.

The diameter of the pulley is the key thing. The A2 three groove pulley is larger than the A1 2 groove so you get a slightly higher alternator rotation speed to keep it close to full charge at idle. That is the only difference between the A1 and A2 pulleys, besides the number of belts obviously. But I can tell you that a 60 amp alternator will burn the belts on a 2 groove pulley setup.
So, bottom line is yes, it will work. whether it will charge at idle depends on the size of the pulley and I am pretty sure the 100 amp units were also alternators which would mean the pulley should be the same as the A2. In any case you would just need to measure the belts and source three matching belts.

I know several of the M38a1 guys over at G503 have switched to the 60 amp alternator and used the 2 groove 25 amp generator pulley on it with no ill effect. It is (or was) a fairly common mod at one time, as replacement 60 amp alternators were at one time priced quite low compared to the 25 amp generator.

Thank you for the replies, I installed the 4 groove and it aligns just fine with the other two three groove pulleys.

I did this also. Rick was very helpful with this swap. You won't need the Bread Box anymore also. !1
