M151 Canvas seat specifications

Unread post by M37 » October 7th, 2019, 11:05 pm

During WW2 the parts list book from Willy’s and Ford Jeep production called out the canvas specifications for the Jeep seats and tops. Specifically it listed the weight of canvas the seats and tops should be made from. It also spelled out what treatment the fabrics were to receive for preservation. The seats required a dry finish preservative, while the top has a wet finish preservative.

Was there ever any similar published specifications that the members here can share about the M151 seat and top canvas fabric?

Thanks in advance,

Joe

If you don't get an answer for this then I can think of two people who would have that info. One is our resident mutt guru Ken. https://g838.org/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=5. And the other is Dave Pizzoferatto. https://g838.org/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=1045. Send either or both a pm and ask them and you should be able to get some info. If there was a published account then Ken would have it.

Once again my old chum Rick backs me into a corner and I have to get on my stepladder to dig out whatever information I have from the dusty archives.

Here's what i found from a Ford Motor Company document from 1961.
Ordnance Number 7345122 - Trim Assembly - Top complete (Gov't supplying webbing and canvas material).
Unit Cost - $25-99 per vehicle.
60" #10 Cotton Duck - Specification CCC-C-419, MIL-D-10860.
Linear Yards - 14.6 Net. 15.7 Gross (includes rejections).
For assembly by McKenzie Awning Company, 3828 Oakman Blvd. Detroit 4, Michigan.

So the only details I have concerning the treatment(s) used for the canvas is the Mil-Spec above. Maybe Dave P can expand on this?

ps... the trim used on the top (edging) was 3/4" and 1" Type 1, OD-7 cotton web as per spec MIL-W-530

hope this helps...a bit....

Ken
Kind regards....
Ken

Rick,

Thank you for the suggestions, and the help baiting Ken into giving an answer! :D

Ken,

Thank you for sharing that information! It really helps since it calls out the canvas weight and treatment for the top. It is really awesome that you have collected so much data on these vehicles!!! Thank you for being so willing to share the information with us all.

I will message Mr. Pizzoferrrato to see if he can shed some light on the seat canvas treatment and fabric weight. I have his canvas on my M37. The top and seat fabric do seem to be slightly different treatments to me. His canvas work and quality are amazing for any who don’t know that already.

Thanks again,

Joe
