Ok got some sleep , worked on it till 1,30 am.
I got the carb straightened out. Checked valves again ,hot and running 015. spot on.
Here's what I found today . When I set the timing with a light it is spot on, but runs like crap, if I set timing for smoothest sounding idle I'm off 30-40 degrees before tdc.
enough for today ,Gotta go flip some ribs!!

No chain but the gears are marked, are you sure you got the marks lined up? The best idle will always be advanced on the timing but not that far.

See? Help is already on the way. Well done, men!

If those marks are lined up I'm betting those gears don't belong in this engine.

How hard is it to check this?
I assume I will have to remove the front of the engine. do I need to dismantle any of the work I have already?
also what manual would cover this my one here does not go that deep into the engine.
we are getting there! just wanted to thank everyone for there help!!!

You will need to take off the crankshaft pulley, water pump and timing cover. If you used the Permatex #3 that I always recommend on the timing cover gasket then it should come off and be able to be reused. Same with the water pump gaskets. All in all it is not a lot of work. The manual would be the -34 I believe.

Silly question and something I forgot to check when I did it the first time I tried... was the timing light adjustment set to zero before you started?

If you take the timing cover off here is an image from Mr. Recovery's rebuild thread. Notice the two holes aligned together on face of gears.

hi

you can check the timing
take the valve cover off
take the sparkplugs out
turn the engine at top dead center ( a bit further as the timing mark )
now piston 1 and 4 are fully up
if you now turn the engine a bit forwards and backwards
at cyl 1 or 4 the valves must tumble i think a 1/4 inch past the timing mark (tdc)
if not the timing is not correct

Rickf let me know if you think the same

george

Ok after a 10 day break,
I double checked every thing that we have done.
I installed 4 brand new plugs, reset timing and now everything seems to be working fine!
Now we bring her back to stone cold stock , body and paint wise! :D :D :D :D :D
