new engine problems

Unread post by Lindsay36551 » November 28th, 2019, 8:27 am

Hey all,
I've installed a take out engine approx. 20 yrs old.
runs (badly) I've done all nine steps, New plugs, Electronic ignition, have put 3 rebuilt carbs on this engine and still runs badly .
no power ,skipping.
I don't know if I have a carb issue or electronic problems.
Timing is spot on
everything is gaped to spec. will start easy and idle well. when brought up to around 2000 rpm starts missing and popping thru air cleaner.
what am I missing here?
Also have changed out 3 known good coils.

should I go back and install the points again and start over?
Thanks for any insight!

Couple other things come to mind, is the timing advance working properly? Capacitor in the distributor? you can easily wire around it.

Hey Hambone!
How would I wire around that for testing?

Just use a jumper to wire around it, I think it was mainly for radio noise suppression. Check rotor and cap also, you can see if your timing advance is working properly with a timing light, should advance by raising rpm's.

This engine has electronic ignition.
Set engine to 12-15 hundred rpm and started to surge and backfire thru the carb, enough for today!

Sounds like you have a timing issue...probably related to the mechanical condition of the distributor. My suggestion is that you pluck that distributor out and give every part a detailed inspection (I'm wondering what is the provenance and condition of those return springs on the advance weights?) and then follow through with a thorough cleaning. Do that and you'll prove, or disprove a great many possibilities. While you have it out, get a long screwdriver and see if that oil pump is sloppy or not. Highly unlikely that it is but...

Cheers,
TJ

That symptom sounds like the classic symptom of an intake manifold vacuum leak. Running lean will cause the intake backfiring.

I would test the old one before throwing parts at it. Adding new parts can sometimes add new problems to the old ones.

I've got Military Collectors ,TV show starting next month , I don't need this in the background when shooting that series for broad cast.
Tell me what you think, Going to make a test stand and go from there!

Oh boy....there's nothing like a deadline to spoil what would otherwise be a casual gear head convention over an unhappy engine.

From your post, I'm wondering if your whole TV deadline will actually involve the use of the MUTT. If so, please share and I'm sure many of us will be looking for it.

I got invited to a photo shoot with my crusty old A2 and another very pretty MUTT that was there locked up its oil pump pressure relief valve and puked out about two quarts of the nastiest oil you've ever seen straight onto the nicest concrete you've ever seen. My point is, you can never tell from the wrapper what's going on beneath the skin.

I wish we were all closer. I'd come over, roll up my sleeves, drink your frosty beverages and provide a lot of useless, cornpone advice.

Anyway, best of luck with your project!

Cheers,
TJ

WC51 or 52?

Either way, nice going. You've picked an easy project for once!
