Gearbox Oil Leak

Unread post by kmam » January 23rd, 2021, 9:30 pm

I have a leak from the gearbox that has drained a fair bit over the past months - so much that I put a litre in it today but still cannot feel the oil through the fill hole. Not sure where it is leaking but wonder if it is possible for it to leak past the shaft that controls the 2/4 WD on the transfer box.

So, I guess the best thing to do is take it out and get to work on it. My question is this: do I have to remove the engine and gearbox complete or can I remove the gearbox only?

You will need to pull the engine.

Yeah, thought so. Luckily I bought a 1250Kg engine crane and an engine mount at auction last week so it will be a little easier than last time when we used an excavator!

That transfer shifter shaft seal is a booger, you can change the seals without pulling tranny.

Ah, I gather you have done one - can you share the experience and any advice?

Thanks, Howard

They can be done with power pak in place but you will be way better off pulling it, I freeze the yoke/flanges in the freezer, makes the wear sleeve installation way easier. On the shift shaft seal, it takes a lot of patience, chisel, digging, prying, be careful not to damage the inside of the housing, make sure to have a stiff drink and no kids around. Hambone

I agree, at the end of the day you will be faster pulling the power pack. I kind of doubt if you can do the shifter seal with the transmission in place but I have not tried it. I think I had to remove the actuating rod, it's been a few years. Do all 4 seals (shifter, both outputs and the brake drum seal).

pull the power pack. i'm not the greatest mechanic in town, and i had mine out in about an hour. this will give you a chance to spot other things that may need doing, and make them much easier to accomplish.
