Hot floor

Unread post by Andrew » February 25th, 2021, 2:19 pm

I'm quite surprised how HOT is floor between front seats during driving. Understand it comes from exhaust system, but is it normal?
Thermic deflector is in place. Exhaust system works well. Can you, guys, fry the eggs between front seats as well ??
Thank you for your comments.

Nature of the beast. If I remember correctly, Rick insulated the bed and cover of his once just so he wouldn't be cooking "hot" dog(s).

The exhaust muffler is directly underneath.

I insulated the floor so I didn't cook my dogs feet! Good memory Surveyor, that was many years ago and it is still insulated. it gets pretty hot. I had a plastic bag of brake parts between the seats and the bag partially melted to the floor. Great for keeping coffee warm in cold weather. The heat deflector for the muffler at one time was silver on both sides and I will bet you will find it has rusted on at least one side which will transfer heat instead of reflect it. That is the case on mine. You can also buy roll on aftermarket heat insulator that you can put under the floor.

They make 1 inch rubber mesh/pad to ease this. !! Been there, done that.
My 69 Roadrunner with a 440 that actual melted my shoes going through Arizona and Nevada. We had to drive in our underwear to survive this was after dark too. Had stop every 2 hours for gas. True story.

i love this place, i just ran into this exact thing and then found this thread... so my question now is would one of these items work for making it so i do fry myself from the heat from the exhaust? i would be cleaning and putting it above the muffler under neath. if not what to you recommend.

Cannot attest to the quality of that particular brand but yes, that is generally the sort of thing that will help.

Just keep in mind that, unless you shield the whole tunnel, heat will migrate from the sides up to the top.

Some fellas are doing only the top center panel, with mixed results.

I don't think anyone has yet provided us with any actual temperature data yet so when it comes to the claim of "frying eggs" I am doubtful.

And yet, I will acknowledge that it would probably make an excellent slow cooker and some of us are STILL waiting for recipes!

Your mileage may vary. Not valid in all 50 states. Not returnable in Mi. Wi. Fl. RI. Do not use near fire, or flame.

Cheers,
TJ

My floor for sure would burn your hand if you touch it after the engine has ran for say 20 min. i will try something like this out, and will get some temps before and after and let you know how it goes... mine does have the shield also, but it get hot.

I'm wondering if some of you fellas are experiencing some kind of restriction in your exhaust or perhaps a really lean condition.

I isolated the area between the two seats with a silver insulating blanket, in this link you can see some images.
The result is acceptable. Although it continues to receive heat and it can be touched with the hand for as long as necessary without any danger, you can also support anything in this area without being in danger.
All the best
