RTV on intake and carburator gaskets?

Unread post by Cisco82 » March 2nd, 2021, 7:04 am

Hi guys I'm going to reinstall intake manifold and carburator , i have new gasket ( carburatore to intake m and intake m to engine) and all surfaces have been cleaned. Would you raccomend to add RTV on gasket surfaces ?

You can use a thin layer of RTV, I prefer Permatex #3 for those types of gaskets. You do not have to worry about any squeezing out and fouling and mechanical workings like you would with RTV. But if all you have is RTV and if you put it on thin so it does not squeeze out the sides it will be fine. Where you do NOT want to use RTV is on the valve cover and side cover gaskets. It will cause the gaskets to slide and they will fall out of place during installation. The valve cover on the 151 has a groove to hold the gasket but as a rule most valve covers do not. Another issue is any excess RTV will circulate in the oil and can clog oil pump pick ups and passages.
