Kicking into steering

Unread post by Andrew » March 29th, 2021, 2:38 pm

during maneuvering, steering is hardly kicking into steering column.
What is wrong? Only rear is engaged.
Thank you for your comments.

Only rear is engaged ? What does that have to do with steering ? I am confused.

Are you talking about the binding hop you get with four wheel drive and sharp turns on hard surfaces?

Hello Rick,

this trouble appears in slow speed maneuvers (eg.parking). During utmost turning
of steering wheel. Same on both sides turning - on the right/left. Front wheel drive is DISCONNECTED.
In forward as well as back movement to.
The strong impacts come to the steering - steering wheel. Not any (mechanical) noises rom below.

What size tires are you running and what tread ?? sounds like they are rubbing the rails in full turns? :?

The other possibility is that you have a very bad u-joint on the outer end of one of the front axles and it is binding up as you turn. This can be very dangerous and can seize and break at any time if this is what is happening. If it seizes while you are driving around a turn you will probably lose control of the vehicle since that wheel will lock up. Check the u-joints closely!

Dan, thank you for comment - the tyres are original army 7x16 and little bit flat (front only).
This can't be an issue.

Rick, thank you for comment - I will check the U joints. You scare me a little bit!

Your welcome, you should also check the steering stop bolt adjustment, I have the wrong tires on in the photo but you can see that if I turn it too far it will rub the swing arms.

Hello Dan,
good point with stop bolt - I will check.
By the way, how are you satisfied with your "civil" tyres?
