Hub bearings

Unread post by bobcat1/178th » April 5th, 2021, 6:04 pm

I recently pulled the wheels and hubs to check the bearings......all looked good so I cleaned the hubs and repacked the bearings.....when tightening them back up I tightened the castle nut firm with normal size socket wrench......with wheels on I pushed/pulled wheel to feel for slack.....None slack felt and everything turns normal....

Is that OK?

You should tighten them roughly 30 ft/lbs. and rotate the wheel a few times in each direction to seat the bearings then back it off and tighten it back up just lightly snug. You do not want the wheel bearings tightly preloaded. If you feel in and out play tighten just a bit more until the play is gone. If you have to go real tight to get rid of the play then something is wrong.

And keep in mind that the only thing keeping your wheel from falling off is a cotter pin. There is a reason that the TM is very specific about the correct size and material of that cotter pin.

As Rick says, you need to tighten the nut to that torque and then loosen the nut by 1/8 of a turn. If you are unable to insert the cotter pin, then back off a little more. There are 2 holes for the pin so not a lot of further loosening the nut shall be required.

The manual is very clear on this process. If you don't have one, I'd recommend picking one up.
