working on replacing brake Master cylinder

Unread post by 70mford151a2 » April 9th, 2021, 4:20 pm

Greetings I have been reading the previous posts about working on the brake Master cylinder and I was wondering if it's the common opinion to remove the pedal assembly as a whole before switching out the M/C I have replaced it a long time ago and I don't remember how I did it, buts it's pretty nasty under there and I think its a good idea, I don't know how it got so nasty one more question is there only 1 line coming out fro the back that splits into to front and back I looked and that's the only one I see, and it has been leaking for years not sure where it's coming from but I want to stop it and clean it all up. any advice is welcomed biggely. I'm going to take pics now Thanks Dave

It's pretty straight forward, 4 bolts on the firewall where you fill the master cylinder, bolt right under dash, remove line and clutch rod, it all comes out as one unit.

when I say it has been leaking for years it's not a major leak and it might even be from not having the rubber gasket and spilling some it took me a while to find that gasket and when I got the mutt in 2005 it didn't even have it, what I am saying is I don't know that it's actually leaking at the M/C it could have been leaking downline I know I was having to top it off once in a while.

If the wire harness was replaced somewhere along the line you might find the wires are under or even through the pedals so you might have to disconnect some wires and reconnect them so they are above the pedals when you reinstall them.

Rick, I know the wiring harness was replaced before I replaced the M/C so that won't be an issue, do you just remove the bolts on the firewall and it just comes out, or is there more to it under the dash, I did it once but it was so long ago I don't remember, I looked in the manuals section but could not make hyde nor hair of them. thanks Rick

Removing the light switch gives another service opening. But might only true if you have ROPS, as it is moved to the right.

Removing the entire cluster is super easy and quick otherwise.

Or roll the mutt over onto the passenger side and then you can stand in the passenger door opening and everything is right in front of you.     This method best done BEFORE restoration!

Don't forget that overlooked hidden bolt behind the dash. Removing the light switch will give you access to this one.

What hidden bolt? it was a bitch cause of that damn brake line coming out of the M/C I had to take the assembly apart under the dash to get it out I hope it goes together easier I have a lot of cleaning up to do 1st though. and I had to take out ignition switch also. but it's out what a mess.don't know how to post pictures

Isn't silicone brake fluid GREAT? Now you know at least one of the reasons I always convert to DOT#3. Are we having fun yet?     When you put it back together be sure to use NEW copper sealing washers on the banjo fitting. And I always anneal mine before using them so I KNOW they are soft. I have gotten them from the store and when they didn't seal I checked them and they were as hard as steel washers!!!!

Hey Rick what does "anneal"l mean I don't believe I have ever seen this word not being a wise-ass I just don't understand, Thanks, mine had the line coming out the side I don't remember seeing a banjo bolt, I was thinking of having the brackets bead blasted and powder coated in order to stop any rust in the future cause mine are all rusted now, or *do you know if the brackets are available for sale NOS going to get a new M/C anyway I would like it to all be new and clean yes I'm replacing the lock washers, any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks again

* I have looked but haven't had any success
