What wire is this by wind shield motor

Unread post by tbh726 » June 28th, 2021, 10:36 pm

I have a wire that was cut that is next to the windshield motor in the cab. There is no marking and the wipers work fine so i am not sure what it goes too. Anyone have any idea?

That appears to have been added in a long time ago, is it hot? Since it is taped to the outside of the harness I would follow it to wherever it goes and see what it is attached to on the other end. It is not factory.

May have been an alternative attempt to make a ground for the wiper motor. As we know, sometimes the pins and hinges of the windshield frame become non-conductive and if it cannot ground to the body, the motor won't work.

Don't be afraid to coat your hinge pins in dielectric grease before reinstalling them after cleaning.... after a good long soak in (dare I say it?) distilled white vinegar. Also, a 45 cal bore brush on a cleaning rod (and chucked up in a drill) will do a nice job of cleaning out the hinges.

Cheers,
TJ

Below Wiper Motor A2.png
On my A2, there is a wire like that, I'll see if I can post a pic of it.

Thanks all,

since you said it is not factory, i started pulling the electric tape off and tracing it back to the source, it appears someone tried to tap into the wire for the windshield wiper motors. did a real butcher job. it is fixable just some solder, liquid tape, finally some electric tape. Wipers work fine so at least they did no real harm..

thanks

I might guess a power lead for a siren, leeching off the wiper power source, but I don't see any nearby switch mount screw holes...... hmmmmmm

Or power for the electric fuel pump on an A1 using an A2 windshield.

yes it was an old tap into the system, it is an a2 so not a fuel pump tap. On the subject of a tap, i am wanting to do a tap myself, was going to go from the batteries to a 24 volt to 12 volt adapter i bought and use it to power a radio, raspberry pi (computer) that would really be pulling power from a 12 volt battery would use the tap to convert down to 12 to recharge the agm 12 volt battery. almost like charging a laptop. my hope is the battery will act as a UPS to protect the solid state devices. i do remember when i was in that you had to turn off devices before you power either up the mutt or before you shut it down.

have you tried anything like this before? I found an old 1950s military Feq meter box that i can reuse for this.

If you have a 24 volt to 12 volt convertor then you have no problem, Just hook it up to the main battery hot and ground and there is your 24 volt. Pulling from one battery only to get 12 volts is not a good idea since it imbalances the batteries.
