Spark wire test

Unread post by Cisco82 » October 23rd, 2021, 7:54 am

Hi there,
this morning i decide to install my new spark plug wires , the old one was installed on the truck since 80' and the cyl 3 wire was repaired with a home-made approach ..
However i did a resistance test for the new and the old ones and the result surprised me : the reisitance was about 1 Ohm for all wires (all and new) ...
I ve read here that the resistance should be aourend 4 or 5 kOhm for feet so i m pretty surprised.

I just connected the multimeter probes with the "pin" located between the spring at wire end and checked the resistance with two multimeters with the same results, i suppose i m following the wrong procedure ...

Those are pretty short wires and the 1 ohm would be good for copper core wire. I am not sure if what you have are the copper core or carbon core wires. I believe the shielded wires are copper core and the shield is the radio suppressor.

Thanks rick , i think they re copper core since the damage one was repaired with a re-welding the terminal "pin"

Keep in mind that a resistance test will only tell you if there is a break or damage to the conductor. You could have damage to the insulation and end it could be arcing to the outer shield and causing a misfire. A friend of mine just went through that on the cross country convoy. Due to the shielded design of the wires you have no way of ever seeing this happening. About the only way to tell if it is bad is to swap that wire with a different cylinder and see if the problem follows the wire or stays with the original cylinder. Or just put a new wire on.
