The always asked question about year manufactured

Unread post by MvPile Oregon » December 13th, 2021, 4:03 pm

Good morning all.
I am looking at making a trade with another Military vehicle collector. The vehicle is an AMG M151A2 with a data plate number NBO4RU-32293. Unfortunately the dates were not stamped on this series of vehicle. Could Ken or anyone else provide a manufacture date? The 4RU part of the number doesn't look correct per the normal numbering sequence, though I'm not really worried about the number for registration proposes. I just want the date for applying for registration in Oregon. Unfortunately I don't yet have the vehicle in Oregon to look for other numbers.
It would be easy if they just stamped the data plate like they did on on my 01/61 M151.

If the vehicle still has the body build tag down on the transmission tunnel then Ken will be able to get you real close on a build date. Look through this thread and it will give you an idea where to look for the tag. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=10358 It is basically about where your right ankle will be when your foot is on the gas pedal, up on the tunnel behind the lines. Small rectangular metal tag tack welded to the body. Get a picture of that for Ken and he can help you out. If it is not there (Not all that uncommon) then it is basically just a good look it over and go by visual clues to get an idea from there. No emissions canister then before 75. 70-71 were built by Ford and had unique front fenders. late 71-early 72 still Ford but normal A2 fenders but would have a BUDD tag on cowl above valve cover. No side drains on body near front of footwell. AMG brought in the side drains.

Thanks.
The vehicle trade is now supposed to occur on Thursday afternoon. I'll get photos of the plates and numbers and post them. Hopefully the vehicle is as nice as the pictures and video.

Interesting Rick. I've wrangled the question of my A2's birthdate since acquiring it. A completely spurious reg number on the "FORD" data plate, showing a 1970 date. Truck has emissions tank, had the canister bracket holes for the vapor canister and the emissions air cleaner with bonus vent lines. No doubt that whoever did this plate wanted to skirt the California smog inspection rules, and it ended up registered at DMV as a 1970. So, if your info is correct, my A2 is actually a 75 or later build? It has all of the other indicators of an AM General truck.

And Kindly Ken was unable to help with the tunnel tag, as the information on my plate failed to come close to any similar series. Hmmmmmm.

Now Jim, Why would anyone want to skirt the Ca. emissions laws? All they are doing is trying to stop old car collectors from ending the world as we know it due to the massive amounts of smog put out by those hundreds of vehicles every year! That sort of goes along with Ca. Proposition 65. ANYTHING you touch will cause cancer and kill you. Guess we all just need to stop eating, breathing and drinking.

Pretty much answered my own question huh?
