Bumperette Installation Question

Got an A1 and an A2 in the yard. Getting ready to paint rear numbers on A1 and noticed that drivers bumperette is mounted "correct" with lip pointed down, no jerry can holder, straps for jerry can go through footman loops mounted on rear panel. Passenger side bumperette is mounted with lip facing up and spare tire resting on it.

A2 has both bumperettes facing down, but has jerry can bracket bolted through rear panel sitting on top of the drivers side bumperette. I've read about A2's not having rear shackles and using the pintle bar with holes for safety chains, and my A1 has both, shackles and pintle bar and that appears to be overkill.

Any direction on bumperette direction?

I thought the gas can sat on top of the bumperette, no gas can holder, I'll see if I can post a pic

Both bumperette lips should point down.
The only authorised use of the gas can carrier is on the front-line ambulances and the recoilless rifle versions..where the carrier mounts on the side.

There was an authorised mod for preventing the gas can from rattling and/or damage when mounted on the rear bumperette....and here it is !

OK, thanks. I've reversed my one that was pointed up and have it pointed down. I'll look at my jerry can holder bracket at another time. Bubba probably just had the single strap and this was an easy way to mount a jerry can rather than the Y shaped strap. JMO

I've got the three footman loop and the Y strap set up on my A1, so presume this would be the same on the A2? Bubba either only had the one strap and jerry can bracket in his shop, or while trying to remove the footman loops to install the Y strap had to cut off the nuts and just put this on. I'll remove the bracket on the A2 and see what is under there. I can always use the bracket and strap on my M38 Coast Guard jeep project and get a Y strap and do the correct instal on the A2 unless I find some other reason why bubba did this.

Yes, the footman loops are the same location for A1 / A2.

Well, Buba went to a lot of work for what appears to be little gain. Four holes and two short 9/16" bolts and nuts through the top of the bracket and the rear panel and two much longer bolts through the lower bracket holes, rear panel and through a support channel on the rear floor. All three footman loops are there in the correct position and Bubba pop riveted the Y strap to the front corners of the jerry can bracket and correctly through the top loop. Appears to be a much thinner gauge steel than my WWII brackets and the pop rivets tell me it's Bubba and not the National Guard unit down the road. Since all footman loops are present, I'll get a new strap and mount the jerry can properly. Might even paint my jerry can red.

If the straps are place, the top one is tightened up tight, the gas can cannot move as it is held tight against the bumperette
