M151A1 Front Brake Lines

Unread post by hondo100 » March 19th, 2022, 7:53 pm

Are the A1 front brake lines the same as the A2? I've got an A1 brake line kit and the front lines don't even come close to fitting. They look similar to A2 lines

Both use the same front end.
What is the part number for the hose?

Had the same problem. Front hard lines are different.

According to the 218-20P Dec78 the hard lines are the same on both sides in the front for the A1 through the A2. 8712395 for the left and 8712396 for the right. 11630516 on the right inner hard line for both and 11630515 for the left inner had line for both.

fergrn37,

Do your front hoses look like the picture? Compared to my A2 the brackets for the end of the hoses are in the wrong place. The wheel cylinder end is fine. I'm going to look at an A1 at the museum today to see what it looks like.

I notice the part numbers were the same in the 34P....

Thanks everyone.

It does look like the brake hose outer brackets are right and left so you might want to see if they are reversed.

Can't tell from the pic. I just know that the hard line 'kit' that I bought ended up being for an A2, not A1. Had to return it for the 'correct' set.

I'll remove the tire to get a better picture then. This is on the A2, AW the pic is still too dark, this is with the new cannon camera which isn't half as good as the old one(of course when I dropped it it broke, they won't fix it but will sell me a new one.)

Interesting about ordering an A1 kit and getting an A2. All the lines in this kit had M151A1 annotations on the stickers on each line, but these look like the lines on the front of my A2. The M151A1 at the museum is identical to my A1 and the lines are original. My next move is to contact the vendor I got these from and to also dig thru the box of "old" lines and see if I can find the original front brake lines.

I'll say the same thing I say every time the issue of brake lines and brake line price/availability comes up:

It is easy to make your own brake lines. The lines, nuts, cutter, flaring tools are inexpensive and readily available. Even the small S curved line on the front wasn't hard to make, you just need a little creativeness to make the curves. I did it by bending it around some pipe set in a vise.

The one thing you need to be careful and preserve is the brake line Tees. They aren't as readily available.

As for the cloth loom, I wouldn't use it unless authenticity is a priority, as the cloth loom holds in dirt and water. When I replaced mine, the areas where the cloth loom was still intact were rusted much worse than the areas where it was missing.

And the rubber lines are the same also, I am not in the manual so I don't have the numbers. The only things different in the way of lines is the line going back towards the center connection for the master cylinder and the Tee fitting. No idea why the Tee fitting is different I have front ends from both A1's and A2's and they are exactly the same, the only difference between them is the hub due to lug nut size. But even in the manual, all of the lines and hoses are the same from A1 and A2 from the Tee to the wheel cylinder.
