MERDC inscriptions

Unread post by rupert's » May 3rd, 2022, 5:31 pm

Hello everyone!!! well.... I've been thinking about putting the inscriptions to the mutt for a long time, I still don't know very well what to do and that's why I like to hear your opinions.

I think I want to put them on the hood and on the front and rear bumpers, but what would I have to put? The mutt is painted in MERDC camouflage
Maybe it doesn't look good somewhere because it may match black parts of the camouflage...

Hello Rupert.

The most important first step for you is to obtain a copy of the Painting and Marking technical bulletin (manual) which explains the markings that are correct for MERDC-painrted vehicles.

The TB you need is TB43-0209 dated 29-October-1976. Read the TB, then come back here and ask any questions that you are not sure about.

If I remember correctly, you can download the TB from this website, for free.

Ken, I had to put a stop to the downloads for now due to the abuse of the system. People were downloading 50 -20 and -34 manuals a day. It was causing me all kinds of headaches with the site hosts since we were using more than allocated resources. I suggest checking out Pedro's.cz or Liberated manuals for the manual. I have all the manuals and I would gladly pass it on to a member but I have no idea how to send large files.

Rick

There are several free large file transfer services.

I had someone send me something for the family business a few years ago with WeTransfer.
They have a free plan for people that don't transfer files often, and the files are under 2 GB

https://wetransfer.com/

I think even Dropbox has a free trial.

Looking at that TB I see the paint scheme but nothing for lettering. I though all lettering on camo paint was either subdued or not there at all with the numbers under the hood or on the dash. Bumper markings in black.

Found it, we have the manual online. It is telling me I can download it. Possibly because I am the Admin. Give it a try and let me know what happens. All else fails you can at least read it from the site. But here is the spec of the markings for camo.
SECTION III.
IDENTIFICATION MARKINGS
7. AGENCY IDENTIFICATION AND REGISTRATION
NUMBER.
There is no further requirement to mark vehicles
and equipment with the identification legend "US Army."
When vehicles and equipment are camouflaged, both
the "US Army" and the registration number will be
removed from vehicle/equipment exterior. The preferred
location of the registration number is any appropriate
interior area which is visible from outside a locked or
secured item.

The lettering was 1", this was from MWO, I made the mistake of repainting it, should have left the old, faded paint on it.This was a 1 owner mutt, he got it the USMC, when I bought it

Ok, I haven't had time to translate the entire manual, but I understand that when they are painted with MERDC Camouflage they have no markings on the outside, all the mutts I see with markings on the bumpers and hood, are they badly marked?

I am pretty sure the unit markings on the bumper are correct but they should be in black. There should be no markings on the body outside. Mark made a comment about his being done according to a MWO, I have never seen the MWO and that would contradict the TB so I don't know what to say there. All of the vehicles I have seen in camo only had black unit markings on the bumpers. And that manual I posted was dated 1990 so that would be after the M-151 was pretty much out of service. At least in this country.

Just to mention a few points about markings etc.

Point-1.
Please use the 1976 TB for your guidance. This TB covers the MERDC paint scheme for Army vehicles only. (not USMC and NOT USAF vehicles).
The 1990 version of the TB covers the 3-color NATO pattern paint scheme. It's no use if your vehicle is painted as MERDC.

Point-2.
Mark mentions the markings and hood numbers on his USMC mutt. BUT......the USMC took little notice of the TB43-0209 because they had their own system of markings etc which were laid down in NAVMC 2666 dated 03-Jan-1977 along with MCOP4750-3B also dated 03-Jan-1977.

I had a copy of USMC lettering/marking for the military vehicles at one time, went belly up with the computer being too old to accept the new software.I'll see if I can find it somewhere.
When the jeeps were painted with Marine green, they had gold colored numbers, lettering on it(2")
