Additives for transmission and differentials

Unread post by MUTT_KAHUNA ED » August 22nd, 2022, 3:43 pm

Aloha..wondering if anyone has put any additives In their trans and differentials? I have an older trans am and put a product called 'power punch' it was advertised as a n additive that DID NOT harm any bronze gears or synchro. If help keep the gear oils on the gears. I put in in my doug nash five speed. It seemed to work as advertised.

Modern Gear oils up to GL-4 do no harm to yellows metals in their native form and GL-5 oils have all been modified with the MT-1 additive to eliminate that problem years ago. I personally use GL-4 in all of my stuff that uses gear oil. Most modern transmissions nowadays use ATF or Synthetic gear oil which is pretty thin. I used to race a drag car with the old DN five speed but it wasn't my car so I don't remember the specs on the tranny.
What it boils down to is all modern oils, engine or transmission, have the additive packages they need already in them and anything you add to that can upset the balance built in. Things have gotten much higher tech than it was 30 years ago.

This is all assuming you are using brand name oils and not the store brand at Bronco Billys Discount Mart.
