Parts Interchangeablity - Ford Pinto

Unread post by muttguru » September 26th, 2022, 4:09 pm

Hello folks,
I'm trying to help an A2 owner overseas who wants to know if a Ford Pinto has similar (or same) parts as an M151-series. He's asking about the radiator and fuel pump.....does anyone have a picture or two of the radiator and the pump, especially a view of the inlet and outlet on the rad.

Any help much appreciated.
Thanks, ken
Kind regards....
Ken

I don't know about parts interchangeability but I've heard to use a pinto carb when putting a f head 134 in a L head M38 without cutting the hood. A few pics of a pinto radiator, inlet outlet look the same, mounting not the same. He could use a fuel pump out of an old Dodge slant 6.

There were a couple different engines used in the Pinto over the years. Ironically those same engines were also used in British cars like the Cortina Capri and Sierra. The early 1.6 engines were standard overhead valve and pushrods and the later were overhead cam. We used to use the early versions in our mini-stock racing class since overhead cams were not allowed. I don't even remember what fuel pump they ran but I am going to say I doubt it is the same as the Ford 6 cylinder/Dodge 6 cylinder that crosses over. The radiator looks close in the pics but I will bet it is a lot thinner. We used Chevy small block V8 radiators in the race cars. We were always trying to find the A711M blocks from the Capri and Escort from England. They never seem to have made the good stuff over here.

Hi Rick and Hambone,
many thanks for the comments and advice.

The "overseas" owner lives in Israel and he has a rough-ish M151A2. As very few of these vehicles ended up in civvie hands, it's almost impossible to find parts for them and he wants to restore what he has to something resembling how it used to look !

I had heard that the Pinto used a radiator that looked very muvh like the M151 rad....... there were also some comments on the G503 board too....and of course Big George in Holland also wrote to me with extra advice.

I've sent the comments to the owner of the A2 so it's now up to him to try whatever may work. I'll let you know how things go.

Kind regards

Ken
