Looking For These Seals

Unread post by Lou » January 16th, 2023, 1:01 pm

Hello Folks,
The throttle shaft seals (butterfly) are bad on my Holley carb. Have several Holley rebuild kits purchased years ago (when they were cheap). In every single one of them the rubber seals have dried out and hardened to a point of being unusable.

Contacted Daytona Carburetor in Florida (got some Holley parts from them years ago), and they no longer have any parts for that carb.

I find it hard to believe that those throttle shaft seals are so special that they were only used on that particular carb.

The photos show the measurements of the seal and throttle shaft. Found one good seal that was pliable so the measurements are accurate. Can anyone suggest a place to purchase these seals from (Hello Rick).

Thanks in advance.

Before I go digging have you checked to see if they are the same as the Zenith seals? If not I can't help you. I have four Holley full kits I managed to scrounge over the years and I am going to use them to rebuild the Holleys I have here so hopefully I can sell them. If you can't find anything you can substitute a dense foam mouse pad.

Rick,
No they are different. Checked with my spare zenith carb. The holley uses a pressed in collar to retain the seals. If you look closely at the photo, the collar pushes against the larger diameter of the seal to retain it. The beveled part of the seal is what actually seals the shaft.

Thanks for your input.

That is the same system as the Zenith, metal collar pressed in on the seal. I am preparing to head for W. Virginia tomorrow early to deliver the two mutts I am getting rid of but I will pull out a Zenith and a Holley and check when I get back. I broke a rib on Sat. working on the truck so moving a bit slower than normal. Don't say it TJ.! I know wat you are thinking!!!!!

Lou
I'm going to Red River Wednesday, I will see if Blake will sell a soft kit, I know he has a few but not sure he will sell one, he's been selling Holleys on Ebay and throwing in a carb kit.

Rick,
Looked at a carb rebuild kit for the zenith the seals are different, if the bore and shaft are the same size may be able to adapt them.

Buddy,
If they do have 1, it will have to be opened up to make sure the seals are not dried up and hard like my seals were in the nos rebuild kits.

Thanks for your responses. :)

You might want to check, I don't think the soft kit has the shaft seals. Usually it is just the top cover gasket, throttle body gasket, base basket and accelerator pump.
The full set has all the seals and gaskets. P/N A5702219, FSN 2910-678-1859

The soft kits have the seals, used several kits in the past. Just for your info, the kit you show in the box is the same one I used on the last rebuild. Those seals will be ok because they are in the sealed bag. The kits I am having the trouble with are the earlier kits from the mid 60"s (these were purchased from Owens Export). Those kits were in a stapled plastic bag. The seals were not in a sealed bag and those 3 kits are now worthless except for the other parts.

Do not purchase any other kits unless they look exactly like the kit you have.

Some of the earlier kits came in boxes too, but the seals were not in the sealed plastic bag, and they went bad too!

Update

Found the newer kit with a contract date of 1971 and the ebay seller opened the box and the seals are in the plastic bag like the last kit I used. So this will get me back on the road. Rick, thanks for the part number.

However, Still looking for the seals ONLY so I can make my 3 other spare kits usable again. It sucks thinking you have spare parts, open the package and finding the seals will crumble in your hands if you squeeze them.

Even back in the 151 rum days there was never enough alcohol to make this boy dance!!!

But stretch, In that same general time period was when I was really big in martial arts and I could do things as far as stretching that still amaze me today.
