M151A2 Master Cylinder Grommet

Unread post by glcaines » January 27th, 2023, 4:03 pm

I'm replacing the Master cylinderf on my M151A2. I ordered a new grommet that goes around the MC where it meets the firewall sheet metal. This is part number 8754072 and is called Boot, Dust and Brake MC Filler Neck. My new one is totally different from the old one as can be seen in the photo. The old grommet is thin and has a groove where the sheet metal is captured. The new grommet is a much thicker piece of rubber without the groove for the sheet metal. I'm assuming one is a newer design. The old one is actually in good condition. The drawing in the -20P TM (1978) appears to show what was already installed. Which is best to use?

That thick one is for the steering column where it goes through the floor, if that's what they sent you it's wrong.

Yes, that is what they sent me. I looked back at my order and I ordered the correct part. Since the old one is still in good shape I'll use it. Thanks for the help.
EDIT: I thought the old one was in good shape. Unfortunately, the old one ripped when trying to re-install it so I'll definitely need a new one.

I will say this. The old 'correct' grommets (the one you are trying to replace) have a tendency to find their way down behind the firewall. Even the new ones seem to do that and I cannot describe how annoying having a new piece behave just like an old piece is.

It occurs to me that if I had had something like the piece they sent to you, and after trimming it to the correct height, I might have put it on first and then installed the grommet above it. By having a spacer behind the grommet, it wouldn't have tended to slip down in.

Something to consider, since you already have the piece in hand.

Cheers,
TJ

I contacted the vendor and he told me that he had parted out ~100 M151A2s and that a significant number of them had the #8754072L bushings for the steering column installed around the MC instead of the #8754072. He was convinced that this was a later change. He suggested that I use it for the MC. However, to install the rubber grommet I received as he suggested requires me to remove and re-install the MC again, and that is not going to happen. Going through that exercise once was enough for me.

I short, he's making claims that he cannot back up with any reliable information. Never do business with 'em again. But, as I said, there might yet be a use for your new part.

Proceed!

That is why I ordered it on the internet. I have been burned by vendors offering incorrect information. If I see a photo, I know it is the right part! :)

I received the correct boot today and it took only 2 - 3 minutes to install. It seals very well against the MC and the sheet metal. Looks very good.
