gearbox leak

Unread post by rupert's » March 18th, 2023, 5:21 am

Good morning friends! I'm pretty sure the mutt's gearbox leaks the oil here, every time I leave the car parked for a day or more I get a stain under the gearbox, and it comes out here...

Do you know how to solve it?
Can it be done without removing the motor?

greetings and thanks for your wisdom

Easy one, the sealer is missing! The two rivets hold a thrust washer in place and they are not oil tight. As such the manual asks for sealing those. I use black silicone sealer for this.

Ideally the rivets should have been installed already with sealer and then additionally covered with sealer. But in your case just seal with black silicone from the outside, that should be good enough.

Check point h) in the manual:

Also check this photo of my transfer case before I overhauled it. The Army did completely cover the rivets and the intermediate shaft with sealer. You don't need that much...

Make sure it is completely clean and dry before putting the RTV on there or it will not seal. Spray it plenty of brake clean to clean it and if possible jack the rear end of the vehicle as high as possible to get the oil away from that area so it will not weep out while you work and while the RTV sets up. NO need to drain the transmission, just get the rear tires on some fairly high stands. You can tell by looking at where the oil fill plug is where the oil level is normally, so if you can get the rear of the trans where that leak is higher that that level you are good to go.

   Understood Rickf and horst, One weekend when I have a while I'm going to separate the handbrake handle and cover it well with sealant, to see if I can stop this leak! Thank you very much for your answer!!
