MUTT photos from the weekend

Unread post by Aussiemutt » December 28th, 2013, 9:31 pm

Thanks guys, I hope the pictures come through OK.
After eight months of doing minor repairs like replacing all the brakes, three universal joints, replacing the wheel bearings, cleaning and testing the radiator plus a heap of very minor jobs, I took the Mutt for its first run last weekend, down to the riverbed behind the house and it didn't miss a beat.
The dry sand was so deep that four wheel drive was a must and at times turning the steering wheel had no effect, I just went straight ahead with the wheels pointing to the side! Also the military bar treads just dug into the sand making progress difficult.
The only casualty was my granddaughter's little 150cc buggy which had to be towed home. The Mutt handled that with ease. Did we have a good day? You bet!
I like the Mutt so much I want another one. My wife is typing this for me so it won't happen!

Nice jeep, nice scenery, nice weather, nice pictures! It's winter here in Europe...most jeeps are asleep now here!

Next time you are in the deep sand lower the tire pressure to about 15 lbs. and you will notice a huge improvement. Great pictures.

Stainless footwell trim also. I know quite a few Vietnam mutts went to Australia.

Can someone tell me why a military jeep has a chrome strip on the top of the footwell ? I've wondered about it and thought the Vietnamese put it there to look pretty or hide rust but from your comments some of you have seen it before. Beats me.
Next thing is to paint and replace the antenna and the jerrycan , and put 173rd Airborne on the bumper. I was attached to them at Bien Hoa airfield in 1965.
And maybe a flag on the hood with corporals stripes on it, that will impress.

This mutt was in a small batch imported from Vietnam several years ago, most mutts in Australia come from there, Pakistan or Malaysia. Malaysia seems to have a small industry rebuilding them for export. The number of mutts here is very few, I would guess less than forty. If you look up GUMTREE and go to 151mutt there are four for sale at present. The $6000 one has rust in the rear crossmember but good running gear.

Price in Vietnam is increasing alots due to people trend to love this vihicle for inroad and off-road for fun. Average is $10000 to have a fair one to run on road.

The footwell strip is a Vietnamese thing as are the brush guards on the front. However I have found the footwell stainless strips very functional as they are hard wearing and protect the paint and metal of the edge of the footwell. If you don't like the stainless finish you can simply paint them.
