Radial Tires on a M151A2

Unread post by Litz » November 21st, 2022, 9:53 pm

Hello,
I tried several searches of the Forum, but I am not having much luck finding specific details on Radial/tubless tires.

I would appreciate any information from those that have mounted radial tires on the originl M151A2 wheels. I am hoping to to get a set of radials with good overall traction and don't rub due to height or when turning the front wheels. (Tire brand, model and size)

Thanks for any information you can share on successful radial tires.

Robin

size 216/85R-16. Brand is basically up to you. I like the BFG AT's. As long as the rims are in good condition and not rusted yo will have no problems running the tubeless tires. There are many on here that do, Much better road manners then the original military tires.

I put Ironman All Country AT 215/85/R16 on mine without tubes, all rims are original and in good shape, no air loss, no rubbing or hitting the body. They are a bit higher and wider than the mil tires, have a great tread pattern and are priced well. The ride is so much better and the mutt feels like it is sticking to the road. I will put them on my other mutt next summer, keep a set of mil on wheels to change out for shows.

I know this is an older thread, but one thing to remember is that the recommended toe-in for bias ply tires is 1/16 - 3/16 of an inch while toe in for radials is normally near zero.

Factory setting for toe in is 1/32 - 5/32. I think the factory setting will be pretty close for radials.

Rick,
You are of course correct. I made the mistake of quoting the wrong toe-in values from a M151 specification sheet from the National United States Armed Forces Museum.

Not a big deal. I did not check other manuals to verify that they all said the same thing, which they seldom do. But even if the toe is set at 1/8" it is not going to create any issues with radial tires. 99% of the people that own these vehicles will have to replace the tires due to age degradation long before they wear out.
