Master Cylinder and brake booster upgrade

Unread post by m151wagon » January 17th, 2020, 4:26 am

Hi All,

I recently acquired a 1964 M151-A1. What I got is a heavily modified vehicle where the previous owner took the M151 body and planted it on a shortened Wagoneer chassis and drivetrain, along with lots of cutting and mods to the M151 body. I am slowly starting to restore some of the body and make some safety improvements to better suit the drivetrain. One of the upgrades I am considering is switching to a dual master cylinder to support disc/drum combination and 33-35" tires (the PO had 38" tires on the jeep).

Has anyone upgraded the brake booster and MC on the M151? Thanks.

Interesting looking vehicle. I can see that the hood has been made up from two M151 hood end to end so who knows what you have done underneath there. With all of the modification I see already I would say that converting to power brakes would not be hard to do, just build the appropriate mounting bracket to fit the firewall for the booster and then extend the brake rod as needed. It appears that you have power steering so another option you could look at is hydroboost brakes. You could get the parts used off of an early eighties Chevy 1/2 ton Blazer or pickup with the 6.2 diesel engine or also a lot of motor homes with P30 chassis used that setup. The motor homes would be using a much larger master cylinder though so get one for the Blazer, that is what I have on my CJ-7.
