Inline fuel pump on a M151A2

Unread post by Litz » November 25th, 2022, 5:31 pm

Hello,

Would there be any problems created if I replaced my mechanical fuel pump with a 24 volt inline fuel pump on a M151A2?

Thanks,
Robin

I don't think so. A pump is a pump is a pump. Important that you be aware of your carb's correct operating pressure and ensure the pump you choose matches that as closely as possible.

That said, be aware there are mechanical civilian pumps that will bolt right up and do the job for you for WAY less money.

You can use an electric pump but the Zenith carb will start to have issues with pressure over 5lb. max. Even at 5lbs. which is the top specified limit I have seen a lot of flooding issues and have had to lower float levels to the point where high speed performance was affected.

sorry to ask, but why?

The mechanical fuel pump is very reliable and almost never a problem. Also easy to overhaul if there is an issue. Glad I have that one and not the electrical pump on my jeep.

You can have your mechanical pump rebuilt with modern material for $100, way more reliable than the modern electric or you can buy an aftermarket mechanical from an old Dodge slant 6 for $30.

When was the last time you priced one of those slant six pumps?!! They are like the water pumps, they have dried up.

They've definitly jumped in price, but can still be had for $45.

I've used Terrill Machine, Inc of DeLeon TX for years. Last rebuild with modern materials was ~$100.
